Replacing a front drive in the 8348-21C

Learn how to remove a front drive in the IBM® Power® System S812LC (8348-21C) system.

Procedure

  1. Ensure that you have the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap attached. If not, attach it now.
  2. Install a drive into the tray. Orient the drive such that the connectors are pointing to the rear of the drive.
    • A 3.5 inch drive fills the tray, as shown in Figure 1. Fasten the drive to the sides of the tray with four screws (2 on each side).

    • A 2.5 inch drive must be positioned at the rear of the tray. While you hold both the drive and the tray, turn the tray over. Fasten the drive to the bottom of the tray with four screws, as shown in Figure 2.

  3. Hold the drive tray by the bottom as you position the drive tray. Slide the drive try all the way into the system. Push the drive tray in until the drive tray handle (A) starts to close, then push the handle in until it locks, as shown in Figure 3.

  4. Lock the drive tray handle (A) by pushing the handle in until it clicks into place.
  5. Configure the installed or replaced drive for your environment.
    1. After you insert a new drive, you must rescan for the device.
      • Ubuntu Linux operating system: To run the rescan-scsi-bus command in the Ubuntu Linux operating system, log in to the system as the root user, and run the following command:
        rescan-scsi-bus
        The rescan-scsi-bus tool is available in the scsitools package; install the package by using the following command:
        sudo apt-get install scsitools
      • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) version 7.2: To run the rescan command in the REHL version 7.2 operating system, log in to the system as the root user, and run the command:
        rescan-scsi-bus.sh -a
        The rescan-scsi-bus tool is available in the sg3_utils package; install the package by using the following command:
        yum install sg3_utils
