This publication matrix contains alerts, news, and documentation for the Core Package 5.2 and Host Package 1.3 releases of the OnCommand™ (Unified Manager) software suite used to manage physical and virtual storage environments with IBM® System Storage™ N series storage systems.
ALERTS
This is the initial deployment of the OnCommand (Unified Manager) software suite which consists of the Core Package 5.2 and Host Package 1.3 releases. OnCommand is both a trademark attached to individual products as well as the product name for the combination of the Core Package and Host Package as the OnCommand (Unified Manager) offering. This software suite improves storage and service efficiency through functions that help you control, automate, and analyze your shared storage infrastructure. It provides integrated policy-based data and storage management for virtual and physical environments by bringing together multiple products. Depending on the configuration installed for this software suite, specific storage management capabilities will be available:
The Core Package provides management capabilities for your physical storage environment which include backup and restore capabilities, monitoring, and provisioning for a physical storage environment. It also provides basic support for virtual storage environments.
The Host Package provides management capabilities for your virtualized storage environment which include discovery and monitoring capabilities.
When both the Core and Host Packages are installed, the OnCommand (Unified Manager) console can display the physical-to-virtual mapping as well as provide policy-based local and remote backup and recovery for virtual objects.
With the introduction of the OnCommand (Unified Manager) software suite, servers and user interfaces that were previously deployed as components of the DataFabric Manager software are now deployed within the Core and Host Packages. Such servers and user interfaces include the DataFabric Manager server, the Operations Manager, and the N series Management Console (which includes the Performance Advisor, Protection Manager and Provisioning Manager). Additional functions and user interfaces are also included with this new offering which can be installed on specific Linux® and Windows® operating systems. Refer to the Release Notes as well as the Installation and Setup Guide for the Core and Host Packages available from this publication matrix for a complete technical overview.
OnCommand Core Package 5.2 introduces new enhancements and changed features which include:
Support for new licensing infrastructure in Data ONTAP 8.2
Validation of the DataFabric Manager server database to check if the database is corrupt
Identifying aggregates as Flash Pool enabled
Data Collector tool to collect diagnostic data for debugging
Support for Sybase server 11.0.1
Support for OpenSSL protocol 1.0.0e
Removal of the 32-bit installer
End of support for Business Continuance License
Performance enhancement by cleaning the DataFabric Manager server
Disabling of the default CPU monitoring
Disabling of data transfer reports by default
Use of SSH protocol by default for storage system communications
The Core Package interacts with host servers using additional N series software:
The DataFabric Manager Host Agent software is installed to collect SAN Host Bus Adapter (HBA) information and remote file system metadata. Refer to the DataFabric Manager Host Agent Installation and Administration Guide available in this publication matrix.
The Open Systems SnapVault (OSSV) software is installed to backup and restore data residing on non-IBM N series physical storage systems. Refer to the Open Systems (OSSV) SnapVault Installation and Administration Guide available from the N series support website.
To monitor and manage the configuration of multiple N series storage systems, a DataFabric Manager configuration plug-in is required for each release of Data ONTAP used on the storage systems. For example, if the same Data ONTAP release is used on all of the storage systems, a single configuration plug-in is required. A different configuration plug-in must be installed on the DataFabric Manager server whenever a different release of Data ONTAP is being used on the storage systems being monitored and managed. Refer to the Overview and Installation Instructions for the configuration plug-ins available from this publication matrix for detailed information.
Various software licenses are required to complete the installation and to activate features of the OnCommand (Unified Manager) software suite. Refer to the Installation and Setup Guide of this Core and Host Packages' release pair for detailed information on the required software licenses. Refer to the General information for license key management for a summary of these license requirements as well as the details about retrieving lost licenses and resolving other licensing issues.
NEWS
The Core Package, Host Package, DataFabric Manager Host Agent, and DataFabric Manager server configuration plug-in software are obtained from software packages available for download using the "Software Packages ...." link from the Download page of the N series support website. Refer to the important information for N series support for step-by-step instructions explaining how to access software packages as part of the complete instructions for entitlement and registration. When following the step-by-step instructions, select the appropriate OnCommand (Unified Manager) software packages from the N series and related Host Software Downloads - Pick page to obtain the OnCommand (Unified Manager) components which will support the storage management configuration required:
OnCommand (Unified Manager) - Core Package
This software package includes the installation files for the Core Package, the DataFabric Manager Host Agent, and the DataFabric Manager server configuration plug-ins for Data ONTAP.
OnCommand (Unified Manager) - Host Package
This software package includes the installation files for the Host Package.
Download the files for the versions of the OnCommand (Unified Manager) components required and install them using the installation instructions found in the documents available from this publication matrix.
