Removing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD service processor card with the system power turned off

Learn how to remove a service processor card with the system power turned off to replace a failing or faulty card, or as part of another service action.

Choose from the following options:
  • If you are servicing the service processor card as part of another procedure that requires you to record the settings of the service processor card, see Recording the service processor card settings.
  • If you must reset the settings in the service processor card after you remove the service processor card, see Resetting the service processor card settings.
  • If you are removing the service processor card as part of a service procedure, continue with the following procedure.

If your system is managed by the Hardware Management Console (HMC), use the HMC to remove a service processor card. For instructions, see Removing a part by using the Hardware Management Console.

If your system is not managed by an HMC, complete the following steps to remove the service processor card from a system while the system power is turned off:

  1. Complete the prerequisite tasks. For instructions, see Before you begin.
  2. Identify the system that you are working on. Turn on system identify (blue) indicator. For more information, see Control panel LEDs.
  3. Use the service indicator light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to help identify the part. For instructions, see Identifying a part.
  4. If the system is running, stop the system. For instructions, see Stopping the system or logical partition.
  5. Open the rack door at the rear of the system.
  6. Disconnect the power source from the system by unplugging the system. For instructions, see Disconnecting the power cords from the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD.
Note: This system is equipped with a second power supply. Before continuing with this procedure, ensure that both power sources to the system are disconnected.

  9. Pull out the service processor card from the card enclosure by holding the locking lever (A) and by supporting the bottom of the card.

You must replace the service processor card that you removed. For instructions, see Replacing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD service processor card with the system power turned off.

Recording the service processor card settings

Before you remove the failing part as part of a service procedure that requires you to record the service processor card settings, ensure to check and record the settings of the service processor card. You can use the recorded information to restore the settings on the replaced part or service processor card.

Complete the following steps to record the settings of the service processor card:

  1. Access the Advanced System Management Interface (ASMI).

You can access the ASMI by using a management console. To access the ASMI, see Accessing the Advanced System Management Interface.

  2. Check and record the following settings:
    • System Name
    • System Power Control
    • System Service Aids
    • System Configuration
    • Network Services
    • Performance Option
    • Login Profile
  3. Record any settings that you have set by using the operating system commands.

Resetting the service processor card settings

The toggle-switches on the service processor card can be used to reset the default password and network settings when you are locked out of the Advanced System Management Interface (ASMI).

If the service procedure you are completing requires that you record the settings of the service processor card, ensure to check and record the settings before you remove the service processor card. For instructions, see Recording the service processor card settings.

Complete the following steps to reset the service processor card:

  1. You must unseat or remove the service processor card from its slot. For instructions, see Removing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD service processor card with the system power turned off.
  2. Move both the toggle-switches on the service processor card (A) from their current position to the opposite position, as shown in Figure 2. This action resets the settings in the service processor card.
