Abstract for z/VM: Virtual Machine Operation

This topic collection explains how to use IBM® z/VM® to operate virtual machines. It is intended to help you:
  • Log on to a virtual machine and load (IPL) one of several operating systems in that virtual machine
  • Manage the storage, processor, and I/O resources of a virtual machine
  • Use z/VM facilities to test programs running in a virtual machine.

Intended audience

This information is intended for anyone who is using z/VM to run an operating system in a virtual machine. Most of the CP commands described in the following topics are class G (general use) commands. Some information about commands of other classes is also included.

This information assumes that you have a general idea of what z/VM does and what a virtual machine is.

Before you read this information, you should know how to run one of the following operating systems on a real processor or in a virtual machine:
  • z/VM
  • z/VSE®
  • z/OS®
For information about running the Linux® operating system in a virtual machine, see z/VM: Getting Started with Linux on IBM Z.
