Roadmap: z/OS system programmer

z/OS® system programmers install and configure IBM® z/OS Container Platform (zOSCP) on z/OS.

See a diagram of their work alongside other administrators in Who works with IBM z/OS Container Platform?.

The diagram shows the tasks for a z/OS system programmer. These tasks are outlined in the list that follows the diagram.

  1. Check zOSCP requirements. See System requirements.
  2. Obtain and install zOSCP. See Installing IBM z/OS Container Platform.
  3. Prepare z/OS for zOSCP. See Before you begin configuring IBM z/OS Container Platform. At this point, you'll need network and security configuration on z/OS. See Roadmap: z/OS network administrator and Roadmap: z/OS security administrator.
  4. Configure z/OS systems to run containers. See Configuring the container runtime on your z/OS system.
  5. Validate container set up.
  6. Configure z/OS systems to run z/OS Control Plane Appliances (zCPAs). See Configuring the IBM z/OS Control Plane Appliance as a Kubernetes control plane node.
  7. Start zCPAs. See Managing an IBM z/OS Control Plane Appliance started task. After this, a Kubernetes administrator can initialize the cluster with the target zCPA as a control plane node on that cluster. See Roadmap: Kubernetes administrator.
  8. Configure your z/OS systems to run worker nodes. See Performing the prerequisite steps required to join a z/OS system to a cluster as a worker node. After this, a Kubernetes administrator can add z/OS worker nodes to the cluster.

The environment is ready for middleware system programmers to build images of software to run in containers. See Roadmap: middleware system programmer.
