Service Definitions tab

You can use the Service Definitions tab in the Workload Management task in IBM® z/OS® Management Facility (z/OSMF) to manage z/OS Workload Manager (WLM) service definitions.

A service definition is an explicit definition of all the workloads and processing capacity in a sysplex. It contains all of the information about the installation needed for workload management processing. A service definition consists of the following items: service definition details, service policies, workloads, service classes, resource groups, report classes, classification groups, classifications, application environments, resources, and scheduling environments. Each item or group of items is contained in a separate section in the service definition. For example, the service policies that have been defined in the service definition are listed in the Service Policies section, the resources are listed in the Resources section, and so on.

The service definitions that have been defined in z/OSMF are stored in the service definition repository and are listed in the Service Definitions table. You can define multiple service definitions for a sysplex; however, only one service definition can be installed in the WLM couple data set for the sysplex.

The service definition repository refers to the directory in the z/OSMF data file system in which the data for the Workload Management task is stored. The z/OSMF administrator defines permissions for the repository when setting up the z/OSMF data file system. If z/OSMF cannot open, read from, or write to the repository, contact your z/OSMF administrator. You can access the repository using only the z/OSMF graphical user interface.

To retrieve the latest information from the repository and refresh the Service Definitions table, click the Refresh button.

For a description of the columns in the Service Definitions table, see Table 1. For a description of the actions that you can take against service definitions, see Actions for service definitions.

For more information about service definitions, see z/OS MVS Planning: Workload Management.

Columns in the Service Definitions table

Table 1. Columns in the Service Definitions table
Column Description
Name Name of the service definition. The name is displayed as a hyperlink. When clicked, the name link opens the service definition in a View tab and displays the Service Definition Details section. The service definition name can be followed by one of the following terms:
  • Installed. The service definition is installed in the WLM couple data set; however, the active service policy is not defined in the service definition.
  • Active. The active service policy is defined in the service definition; however, the service definition is not installed in the WLM couple data set.
  • Installed & Active. The service definition is installed in the WLM couple data set, and the active service policy is defined in the service definition.

If the consistency checking feature in the Settings tab is enabled, when you display the Service Definitions tab and when you refresh the Service Definitions table, z/OSMF examines the WLM couple data set to verify that the installed service definition and the active policy identified in z/OSMF match the service definition and policy contained in the couple data set. If there are inconsistencies, z/OSMF automatically extracts the installed service definition and tries to identify the active policy.

If consistency checking is not enabled, z/OSMF assumes that the last service definition and policy that were installed and activated using z/OSMF are installed and active in the sysplex.

If your installation is using other tools or products, such as the WLM Administrative Application, to manage your service definitions and policies, z/OSMF might not accurately identify the service definition and policy that are installed and active in the sysplex.

Description Description of the service definition. You can use this field, for example, to indicate the version of a service definition.
Activity Indicates the state of the service definition. This column can have one of the following values:
  • Being viewed
  • Being modified
  • Changes pending
  • Being viewed, changes pending
  • Being modified, changes pending
  • Temporary

The values and icons in the Activity column are displayed as a hyperlink. Click the link to display the associated message. To display the messages or help for the messages, you can also select the cell that contains the link or icon and press Ctrl+M (message) or Ctrl+Q (message help). For more details about each state, see help topic Service definition activity.

Note:
If your browser is busy and cannot communicate with the z/OSMF server within three minutes, z/OSMF assumes that the service definition is not in use and releases any locks. If this situation occurs, you might notice one of the following:
  • The state in the Activity column does not reflect the actual state of the service definition. For example, if you have the service definition open in a Modify, View, or Print Preview tab, the activity might be blank even though you are modifying or viewing the service definition.
  • Another user deleted the service definition while you were viewing or modifying it.
  • Message IZUW010E or message IZUW121I is displayed when you save the changes that you made to a service definition that is open in a Modify tab. If this occurs, z/OSMF released your lock and another user locked or deleted the service definition. If another user holds the lock, you can wait for the user to release the lock, and then save your changes. To avoid overwriting another user's changes, it is recommended that you contact the user to resolve the conflict.
If these situations occur frequently, try working with fewer tabs, or consider using a different browser. For a list of the supported browsers, see IBM z/OS Management Facility Configuration Guide.
Sysplex Name of the sysplex on which the service definition is currently installed. The name is displayed as a link. Click the link to display the WLM Status tab.
Messages Indicates the highest severity message that has occurred for the service definition. One of the following message indicators is displayed:
  • Blank. No messages exist for the service definition.
  • Information. Information messages exist for the service definition.
  • Warning. Warning messages exist for the service definition. Information messages might also exist.
  • Error. Error messages exist for the service definition. Information and warning messages might also exist.

To display the messages, you can click the link or status icon, or you can select the cell that contains the link or icon and press Ctrl+M. The message log is displayed in either a new or an existing View tab. If the service definition is currently open in a View tab, the tab receives focus and the message log is displayed within that tab. Otherwise, the messages are displayed in a new View tab.

Last Modified Date and time the service definition was last modified.
Modified By User ID of the person who last modified the service definition.

Actions for service definitions

The actions are described in the following tables:

  • Targeted actions. Actions that apply to the selected service definitions. To use a targeted action, you must select one or more service definitions.
  • General actions. Actions that apply to service definitions. No selection is required.
  • Table actions. Actions that apply to the entire table. No selection is required.

A limited set of actions is available until you create the first service definition. If an action is not included in the Actions menu, the z/OSMF role to which your user ID is assigned might not be authorized to perform that action. To obtain authorization, contact your z/OSMF administrator.

When you modify, copy, or define service definitions, you can use only the first 256 characters in the Unicode character set because WLM can work with only single-byte character code pages. In some of the fields in the service definition, you can use only a subset of these characters; in which case, the characters you can use are listed.
