After
a user logs in to the shell, the system initializes the shell for
that user. During the initialization, the system does the following:
Similar systems typically have an /etc/passwd file, which contains the HOME and PROGRAM environment variables. The file also contains the passwords and password phrases that are used. To provide better security, the z/OS shell does not use the /etc/passwd file; instead, it uses the initial values assigned to these variables in the RACF user profiles.
