Installing IBM Softcopy ReaderIBM Softcopy Reader is made up of two programs: (1) Book Reader, and (2) Shelf Organizer. It can be installed on a personal computer with Windows XP, Windows Vista (with a minimum of Service Pack 1 installed), Windows 7 (32 or 64-bit) or Red Hat Linux 9.0..
Refer to Readme file
Please refer to the Readme file shipped with the IBM Softcopy Reader (C:\Program Files (x86)\IBM\SCR\swinread.txt on Windows 7 64-bit machines, or C:\Program Files\IBM\SCR\swinread.txt on all other Windows machines) for any other specific requirements and to ensure you have the latest most up-to-date installation instructions. When you install the Softcopy Reader, the following items will be installed on your workstation.
Note:
Starting with the March 2003 IBM Online Library Collection
Kits, the Windows version of the Book Reader and Shelf Organizer programs
are executable in the native Windows environment. You no longer need
to have the Java Runtime environment installed on your Windows machine. Once the Windows version of IBM Softcopy Reader is installed, you can run the Book Reader and Shelf Organizer programs by clicking on the icons installed on the Windows desktop, or by clicking the Start button on the Windows desktop and selecting the following: Start > Programs > IBM Softcopy Reader Note:
The Book Reader and Shelf Organizer programs
may be run from the command line interface, however when doing so
on a Windows 7 64-bit system, it is important to note that only 32-bit
Java is supported. It is the responsibility of the user to ensure
that 64-bit Java is not launched. If 64-bit Java is inadvertently
launched (usually the result of the PATH environment variable setting)
certain dll compatibility errors will prevent the program from running. Linux Installations The Linux version of IBM Softcopy Reader is installed and run via the command line interface only. Windows Administrator Authority New for the Windows version of IBM Softcopy Reader V3.4, is the capability of users without Windows Administrator authority to both install and run IBM Softcopy Reader. When installing IBM Softcopy Reader, select the option "to install to the current user" for a user specific installation, or select "All Users" to do a system wide installation (requires Administrator authority). The Windows version of IBM Softcopy Reader now uses configuration files specific for each user in the user's Documents and Settings home directory. You will need access to at least some user writable hard drive space and authority to modify the user's specific Windows registry hive:
Most users have this authority by default. System-wide installations need some user writable hard drive space and the authority to modify the Windows Registry hive: This may require you to have Administrator authority.
