Common tools for problem determination

z/OS problem management

z/OS® contains many tools and service aids to assist you when a problem does occur. The more you know about these tools and service aids, the easier it is for you to diagnose problems and send data to IBM®. This chapter provides an overview of the some commonly used tools and where to find more information about each of them.

This chapter covers these topics:
  • Messages
    z/OS issues messages from z/OS elements, features, program products, and application programs running on the system.
  • IPCS
    Interactive Program Control System (IPCS) is a powerful diagnostic tool in the MVS system that aids the diagnosis of software failures. IPCS provides formatting and analysis support for dumps and traces produced by MVS, other program products, and applications that run on MVS.
  • Logs
    z/OS communicates problems through messages that it writes to logs.
  • Traces
    Traces record of the processing of a program or transaction. There are six main types of traces on z/OS to assess problems and performance.
  • Dumps
    A dump records or copies, at a particular instant, data from one storage device onto another storage device to protect the data. Dump data is extremely useful when debugging the problem.
  • IBM Omegamon for z/OS Management Console
  • AMATERSE for FTP programs
    AMATERSE is a utility that compresses and sends dump data to IBM.

    Learn about the many types of documentation that aid problem determination.
