The logical tuning approach
All of the features and facilities of OMEGAMON are designed around the concept of a logical tuning approach for improving the performance of your z/OS® system.
The logical tuning approach methodology consists of the following tasks:
- Setting standards for z/OS performance
at your site
You set standards for z/OS performance via OMEGAMON exception analysis. Exception analysis explains procedures for setting exception analysis thresholds.
- Monitoring z/OS to measure
actual performance problems against these standards
Monitoring of actual z/OS performance consists of asking these two basic questions:
- Is response time adequate?
- What are the problems in the system?
- Identifying the cause of performance problems
When response time falls below your site’s performance standards, you can use bottleneck analysis to help you identify the cause of the problem. With the information you receive from bottleneck analysis, you can take action to solve the problem.
- Taking action to correct problems
Some of the system problems that exception analysis messages indicate can also be identified and solved with bottleneck analysis; others call for the resource analysis available with the various OMEGAMON exploratory commands.
OMEGAMON helps you carry out each of these performance tuning steps.
