Using approval process

This lesson walks you through the process of using the approval process solution.

What you should be able to do

At the end of this lesson, you should be able to submit an object to the approval process, approve it in Business Space, and check that the approval is registered in WSRR.

Introduction

The approval process solution expands the in-built governance capabilities of WSRR. Approval process leverages the advanced human-centric capabilities of Process Server to implement a more advanced governance approval solution.

This lesson demonstrates how WSRR and Process Server cooperate in the approval process solution by taking a business process object through to the Business Capability Approved governance state. In the lesson, you play two roles: you are both the business analyst who proposes the new business process, and the approver who reads the charter and approves it in Business Space.

Part 1: Proposing the business process for charter review

In this part of the lesson, you play the role of the business analyst who is proposing the business process. The business process exists in WSRR, you open it and submit it for charter approval.
  1. Log in to the WSRR web UI and open the Business perspective.
  2. Click Business Governance > Business Processes to open the business process collection.
  3. Click the approval process tutorial link to open the detail view.

  4. Click Propose for Charter Review to move the business process to the Charter Review governance state.

Part 2: Approving the charter

In this part of the lesson, you adopt the role of the approver whose job it is to review the charter and grant approval.

  1. Open a web browser and enter the web address to connect to Business Space (for example, http://mywpsserver.ibm.com:9443/BusinessSpace). Log in using the user ID of the approver. The Tasks widget in Business Space lists the WSRR Governance Approval task.

  2. Click the edit task icon to open the task processing form in the Task Information widget. Details of the business process object are displayed in the Service Registry Detail widget.

  3. In the Governance Approval Process pane of the Task Information widget, select the Approved box, and add a comment to the Comments field.

  4. Click Submit to submit your approval.

Part 3: Viewing the approval details in WSRR

In this part of the lesson, you play the role of the business analyst again. You see that the business process has been approved, and view the comment that the approver has added.

  1. Log in to the WSRR web UI and open the Business perspective.
  2. Click Business Governance > Business Processes to open the business process collection.
  3. Click the approval process tutorial link to open the detail view. Note the Governance state has changed to Business Capability Approved.
  4. Expand the Additional Properties to view the details of the Process Server approval process that have been added to the business process object.
