Tracking license usage in VMs by using IBM License Metric Tool

You can track your WebSphere Automation VPC usage in virtual machines (VMs) by using the IBM License Metric Tool, which uses software identification tags to detect the software installed in your environment. An IBM software identification tag (also known as a swidtag) is an XML file that is included in the relevant IBM product package and deployed by the product installer.

About this task

The IBM License Metric Tool can calculate VPC consumption only when software identification tags exist and are activated by the customer. For IBM License Metric Tool to detect and start tracking license usage in VMs, the customer must manually copy the WebSphere Automation software identification tag to the appropriate location on the file system.

The following table provides the software identification tag information for WebSphere Automation.

Product name Version Software identification tag for WebSphere Automation
IBM WebSphere Automation 1.11.0
ibm.com_IBM_WebSphere_Automation-1.11.0.swidtag
IBM WebSphere Automation 1.10.0
ibm.com_IBM_WebSphere_Automation-1.10.0.swidtag
IBM WebSphere Automation 1.9.0
ibm.com_IBM_WebSphere_Automation-1.9.0.swidtag
IBM WebSphere Automation 1.8.2
ibm.com_IBM_WebSphere_Automation-1.8.2.swidtag
IBM WebSphere Automation 1.8.1
ibm.com_IBM_WebSphere_Automation-1.8.1.swidtag
Tip: When installing, or when upgrading WebSphere Automation to a different version, make sure no tags related to older versions of WebSphere Automation are present. Search for file extensions *.sys, *.sys2, *swtag, and *.swidtag.

Ensure that your search returns only tags that identify the currently installed version. Remove any other software identification tags.

Contents of the *.swidtag file of each applicable WebSphere Automation version are listed as following:

CAUTION:
Do not change the name or content of the software identification tag. IBM License Metric Tool uses file names to discover the product.

Procedure

  1. Identify the VMs or servers with the WebSphere Application Server instances that are managed by WebSphere Automation.
  2. Download the swidtag file using the name and contents previously mentioned. The extension of the file must be .swidtag.
  3. Place the software identification tag in the product installation directory. For example:
    <COMPONENT_ROOT>/swidtag/
<COMPONENT_ROOT> is the location where the software component is installed.
Each instance of a software identification tag that is detected on a system is reported by IBM License Metric Tool as a separate installation of your software component.
  4. Deploy the IBM License Metric Tool agent on each VM that was identified in step 1.
  5. In IBM License Metric Tool, scan the managed VMs or server file systems for gathering capacity data. In the IBM License Metric Tool Software Classification report, you receive a list of VMs or servers where the WebSphere Automation software identification tag is discovered. You can review the IBM License Metric Tool assignments and update them as needed. To verify that components are assigned correctly, refer to https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/license-metric-tool?topic=classification-assigning-components-products-cloud-paks.
  6. After you confirm the WebSphere Automation software classifications in the IBM License Metric Tool, it will provide the related VPC license usage consumption for WebSphere Automation.
