Restoring a server from a backup

If a server does not start and if you have a backup of the server environment and metadata, you can restore the server.

About this task

When WebSphere Automation creates a backup, it creates an archive of certain directories and stores them on the server file system. If insufficient disk space exists to create the backup, the fix installation process fails. Profiles, configurations, and applications are not backed up. To create backups of profiles, configurations, use the standard procedures in the WebSphere Application Server or WebSphere Application Server Liberty documentation.

Procedure

  1. In the WebSphere Automation UI, open the information panel for the fix management record with the server backup that you want to restore.
  2. Under Fix history, download the runbook.log file.
  3. Open the runbook.log file in a text editor and note the file name and file location of the backup archive.
  4. Access the server that you want to restore with a user profile with administrator privileges.
  5. Open the backup archive and note the directories that are archived.
The archive contains the Installation Manager installation directory, the Installation Manager data directory, and the WebSphere Application Server or WebSphere Application Server Liberty installation directory. These directories contain the binary files that are modified during the fix installation process.
  6. Extract the backup archive from the root directory.

What to do next

If you backed up profiles or configurations, refer to the WebSphere Application Server or WebSphere Application Server Liberty documentation for instructions on restoring them.
