Creating a workspace using Wazi Developer for Workspaces

Audience: z/OS application developers

This section describes how a developer can start using IBM® Wazi Developer for Workspaces with the custom stack.

Once Wazi Developer for Workspaces was deployed to an OpenShift® cluster, all developers on a team can get a URL with which they can connect to the deployed Wazi Developer for Workspaces instance.

Create a new account in IBM Wazi Developer for Workspaces

In a browser, enter the URL of Wazi Developer for Workspaces that is provided by your OpenShift administrator. If you do not have an account, click Register at the bottom to create a new account. Once you have your credentials, use them to log in to the application.

Create a workspace using IBM Wazi Developer for Workspaces stacks

After you log into Wazi Developer for Workspaces, you can see a Create Workspace page that contains tiles of all the different stacks you can choose. Wazi Developer for Workspaces offers 2 stacks for you to choose according to your needs:
  • Wazi Developer: Creates a clean workspace with all the Wazi Developer for Workspaces tools installed.
  • Wazi Developer with sample apps: Creates a workspace with all the Wazi Developer for Workspaces tools installed together with a sample repository called zopeneditor-sample. Once the workspace is created, you can familiarize yourself with your new workspace by following the tutorial.

All Wazi Developer for Workspaces stacks contain the following tools:

  • IBM Z® Open Editor VS Code extension
  • IBM Z Open Debug VS Code extension
  • Zowe™ Explorer VS Code extension
  • Zowe CLI
  • IBM RSE API Plug-in for Zowe CLI
  • Java™ 1.8.0 OpenJDK

Create a workspace with your own Git repository

You can always add your own Git repository into a workspace. Follow Red Hat® documentation to create and configure your own workspace.

Note: Wazi Developer for Workspaces is built on top of Red Hat CodeReady Workspaces. For more information on what else can be done with workspaces, see the End-User Guide.

What's next

  • Making code changes

Wazi Developer for Workspaces provides modern editing experience for COBOL, PL/I, and HLASM development.

  • Setting up connection to z/OS® and managing z/OS resources

Make sure you have a z/OS system that is reachable from your OpenShift cluster. You need access to a z/OS® system with z/OSMF or RSE configured to take full advantage of all the features in the stack.

  • Building z/OS programs with user build

With user build, you can run a user build to compile and link programs before the code is ready to be exposed to the repository for others to use.

  • Debugging applications

With IBM Z Open Debug, a remote debug interface to be used with z/OS Debugger, you can debug z/OS COBOL and PL/I applications in IBM Wazi Developer for Workspaces.
