Creating a Slack alert receiver

Create a Slack alert receiver using an incoming webhook to get alerts and their details in specified Slack channels. The Slack alert receiver in watsonx.data integration uses a Slack incoming webhook to send and manage alert notifications.

About this task

Creating an alert receiver is a procedure that you need to perform partially in Slack and partially in the watsonx.data integration UI. To get triggered alerts in your Slack channel, you need to assign an alert definition to an existing Slack alert receiver.

Prerequisites

To create a Slack alert receiver, you must have an account on Slack, a Slack API app, and a Slack incoming webhook. Your Slack API app must be connected to the Slack workspace that contains the channel or conversation where you want to receive alerts.

You need only one Slack API app per Slack workspace. If you don't have a Slack API app for your workspace, complete all of the steps in the Creating a Slack app section.

You must create a different incoming webhook for each Slack channel or conversation in which you want to receive alerts. If your workspace already has a Slack app, skip to Creating a Slack incoming webhook.

Procedure

Complete the following steps to create a Slack alert receiver.

Creating a Slack app

If your workspace does not yet have a Slack app, complete the following steps to create one:

  1. Go to the Slack API site. Make sure that you are signed into the workspace where you want to receive alert notifications.

  2. Click Create New App and choose From scratch.

  3. If you’re not signed in into a Slack workspace, you need to sign in first.

    1. Click Sign into a different workspace.

    2. Click Create New App.

  4. Provide the App name and select the workspace in which you want to develop your app.

  5. Click Create App.

Creating a Slack incoming webhook

When you have a Slack app in your workspace, complete the following steps to create an incoming webhook:

  1. Go to the Your apps section on Slack and click the app that you want to use.

  2. Click Incoming Webhooks, then toggle the switch to activate incoming webhooks.

  3. Click Add New Webhook.

    • Depending on your organization's requirements or if you don’t have a webhook yet, you might need to click Request to Add New Webhook first.

  4. Choose the channel, direct message, or conversation where you want to receive alert notifications, then click Allow. Copy the webhook URL and proceed to configure a Slack alert receiver in the watsonx.data integration UI.

Configuring your Slack alert receiver in the watsonx.data integration UI

After you have a Slack app and webhook URL, complete the following steps to create your Slack alert receiver.

  1. In the Data Observability page of the watsonx.data integration UI, click New alert receiver, then choose Slack as the alert receiver type.

  2. Provide a unique name for the alert receiver.

  3. Paste the webhook URL that you previously copied.

  4. Enter the name of the Slack channel or the names of the person or people in the conversation where you want to receive alert notifications.

  5. To confirm that the alert receiver is working properly, click Create receiver. Check your Slack channel for the notification. If you receive it, click Verify. The alert receiver is configured properly.

  6. Optional: Select the alerts to which you want to assign the alert receiver.

  7. Click Save.
