Publishing assets from a project into a catalog

You can publish various types of assets from a project into a catalog.

For the list of asset types that you can publish to a catalog, see Asset types and properties.

Requirements

  1. You have the Admin or Editor role in both the project and the catalog.

  2. You have the following roles and permissions, depending on the scenario:

    • To create a new asset in the target catalog: the catalog Admin or catalog Editor role.
    • To update an existing asset in the target catalog: the catalog Admin or catalog Editor + asset owner, or catalog Editor + asset editor roles.
    • To update an existing asset that isn't in the target catalog: asset owner or asset editor roles.
  3. You have the Data scientist or Developer role in IBM Software Hub user management.

  4. The asset does not originate from another catalog and have any masked columns. You can't publish a data asset that originated in a governed catalog and that has masked columns to another catalog.

Publishing assets

To discover and publish multiple data assets from a specific data source, use a metadata import asset.

To publish one or more of any type of asset from a project to a catalog:

  1. Select assets you want to publish to the catalog:

    1. From the project’s Assets page, click an asset type.

    2. Select all or specific assets from the list.

If you're publishing data assets that are identified as identical data assets and you aren't the asset editor of the identical data asset, the data asset that you're publishing references the shared properties of the existing identical data asset.

    3. Click Publish to catalog.

  2. Choose the catalog and fill in the asset properties. If any of the assets require a connection, those connections are listed and will be added to the catalog as connection assets. If you don't want to publish a connection, you can remove it. All assets that require the removed connection are removed from the list of assets to publish.

  3. If duplicate assets exist in the catalog, select a duplicate handling method:

    • To add new property values to the assets in the catalog, select Update.
    • To remove all existing property values from the catalog assets and replace them with new values, select Overwrite.
    • To create new assets, select Add duplicate. This option is available only if the catalog Duplicate asset handling setting is set to Allow duplicates.
    • To keep the original catalog assets, select Preserve. Find out more about specifying duplicate asset handling in Handling duplicate assets in catalogs.
  4. Select the appropriate privacy level for your asset. To learn more about the privacy setting, see Controlling access to an asset in a catalog.

  5. Click Publish. The assets are added to the catalog and you are the owner of them.

After an asset appears on the catalog Browse page, click its name to view and update it.

If data protection rules are enforced for the catalog, the preview for a data asset is unavailable until the asset is evaluated.
