Automatic migration

This guide explains the process for migrating from watsonx Assistant to watsonx Orchestrate. The migration ensures continuity of your conversational AI capabilities while leveraging the enhanced features of watsonx Orchestrate.

Requirements

Before initiating migration, you must meet the following criteria and requirements:

  • New watsonx Orchestrate instance: Only watsonx Orchestrate instances created after June 30, 2025 are supported for automatic migration. Use such an instance as your target.

  • Commercial agreements: IBM and the client must have established commercial agreements.

  • IBM Cloud-only: Your instance must be hosted under the IBM Cloud platform.

Request for automatic migration

You must fill in the Migration Request Form with the following details:

  • Customer Name

  • wxA Instance CRN (see How to Find CRN)

  • wxO Instance CRN (see How to Find CRN)

  • Do you need Classic watsonx Assistant interface and Dialog? (Y/N)

  • Do you use or need watsonx Assistant Coexistence (Dialogs and Actions)? (Y/N)

  • Preferred migration date (minimum 1-week notice)

Obtaining your CRN

To obtain the CRN (Cloud Resource Name) for an instance:

  1. Navigate to IBM Cloud Resources.

  2. Expand AI/Machine Learning.

  3. Click on the row (not the name) for the watsonx Assistant or watsonx Orchestrate instance.

  4. Copy the CRN from the instance details.

Migration process

The migration will be managed by IBM's Project Management and Development teams. The process includes the following steps:

  1. Feature Enablement

The team will activate any features required for your new watsonx Orchestrate instance.

  1. Automated Migration

Your existing watsonx Assistant instance will be migrated automatically to the designated watsonx Orchestrate instance.

  1. Coordination and Oversight

Project Managers will oversee the process to ensure a smooth and timely migration.

Post-migration steps

After the migration is complete, follow these steps to validate and finalize your setup:

  1. Verify the Migrated Instance

Access the watsonx Orchestrate AI Assistant Builder to confirm that your content and configurations have migrated successfully.

  1. Migrate Custom Applications

If you have custom applications that were integrated with your previous watsonx Assistant instance, you must update them manually to point to the new watsonx Orchestrate instance. For detailed instructions, see Migrating to watsonx Orchestrate.

  1. Test Integrations

    • Validate all channels (such as web chat or messaging platforms).

    • Test voice integrations, if applicable, to ensure proper functionality.

  2. Decommission the Old Instance

Once you have confirmed that the new instance works as expected, you can safely remove your previous watsonx Assistant instance to avoid unnecessary costs.
