Using the z/OS Migration Management Tool to create and manage migration definitions

Before you migrate a WebSphere® Application Server for z/OS® node to Version 9.0, you must create Job Control Language (JCL) jobs (CNTL and DATA datasets) that you run during the actual migration. You can use the z/OS Migration Management Tool to create a migration definition and upload the migration jobs.

Before you begin

This topic is about profile configuration migration. To migrate your applications to the latest version, use the WebSphere Application Server Migration Toolkit.

  1. Install WebSphere Application Server Version 9.0 on a z/OS system containing the earlier configuration.
  2. Install the WebSphere Customization Toolbox.

  3. Make sure that an FTP server is up and running on the z/OS target system.
Note: The z/OS Migration Management Tool is intended for use by a systems programmer or administrator who is familiar with the z/OS target system on which the migrated Version 9.0 nodes run.

About this task

The z/OS Migration Management Tool itself does not perform the migration; it creates batch jobs and instructions that you can use to perform the actual migration tasks. The jobs and instructions that you generate using the z/OS Migration Management Tool form a migration definition on your workstation that you then upload to your z/OS system and use for the migration.

In WebSphere Application Server for z/OS Version 9.0, you can use the z/OS Migration Management Tool and the jobs as well as instructions that it generates to migrate to Version 9.0 nodes. After you actually migrate a node, however, you must use the WebSphere Application Server for z/OS Version 9.0 administrative console or scripting to administer it.

Tip: The z/OS Migration Management Tool creates a response file to hold the various values that you enter when you generate a WebSphere Application Server for z/OS migration definition. This response file remains on the workstation on which the z/OS Migration Management Tool is run, and you can use this file as a basis for creating similar migration definitions later. The z/OS Migration Management Tool allows you to put these response files on network drives where they can be shared with other users.

Procedure

  1. Start the z/OS Migration Management Tool.

  2. Create your migration definitions.

  3. Optional: Modify the variables in your migration definitions.

    Read Modifying a migration definition using the z/OS Migration Management Tool for more information.

  4. Optional: Delete any existing migration definitions that you want to remove.
    1. In the WebSphere Application Server for z/OS migration definition table, select the migration definition that you want to delete.
    2. Click Delete.
    3. Click Yes.
  5. Optional: Review your migration definitions.

  6. Upload your migration jobs to a target z/OS system, or export the jobs to the local file system.
