Migration Toolkit Rules

Use the Migration Toolkit Rules to configure migration rules for WebSphere Application Server and Liberty technologies.

The Cloud Migration Tool identifies application issues to consider when you move an application to cloud platforms such as IBM Cloud Runtimes (Cloud Foundry PaaS), Third-party PaaS (CF), Containers (OpenShift, Kubernetes), and Virtual machines (IBM Cloud).

Liberty migration rules

Jakarta EE version migration
The rules in this section are related to moving Jakarta EE levels. The migration rules represent behavior changes that were introduced in Jakarta EE 9.
Java EE version migration
The rules in this section are related to moving Java EE levels. The migration rules represent behavior changes that were introduced in Java EE 6, 7 and 8. Most of the Java EE 7 changes in JAX-RS, CDI, and JPA are because of underlying implementation changes. Migrating JAX-RS and JPA is optional because the Java EE 6 implementations can run with the rest of the Java EE 7 profile. If you are migrating to Java EE 8 in WebSphere Liberty, all technologies must be at a Java EE 8 level.
Java SE version migration
Under the Java Code Review set of rules, Java SE Migration category contains rules for migrating from J2SE 5.0, Java SE 6, Java SE 7, Java SE 8 or Java SE 11 or Java SE 17. Java migration targets are Java SE 8, 11, 17 and 21.

Migrated Apache Tomcat configuration elements
In Apache Tomcat, certain configuration required by an application can be in the server.xml, context.xml, or web.xml files, which are located in the Tomcat conf directory. The server.xml and context.xml files can also reference the default tomcat-users.xml file located in the Tomcat conf directory or user-defined configuration files that contain tomcat-users elements. Additional configuration can be in the META-INF/context.xml or WEB-INF/web.xml files of the application.
