Traits, claims, and credentials

The Verifiable Credentials Specification identifies three key stakeholders in the management of IBM Verify Identity Access Digital Credentials:
  • Issuers: Entities that issue credentials.
  • Holders: Individuals or organizations managing credentials.
  • Verifiers: Entities validating credentials.
Note: The Verifiable Credentials is not limited to digital identities alone; PII can be used in a variety of verifiable credential use cases.

Components of identity verification

  • Traits: Granular data elements (for example, date of birth, social security number, and so on.).
  • Claims: Assertions verifying traits.
  • Credentials: Structured sets of verified claims.

The complexity of the vetting process by an examiner is the level of due diligence, regulatory compliance, and other tasks that are required to verify that an identity trait depends on how the claim is used.
