Windows: IBM Installation Manager

Tivoli® Storage Manager uses IBM® Installation Manager, which is an installation program that can use remote or local software repositories to install or update many IBM products.

If the required version of IBM Installation Manager is not already installed, it is automatically installed or upgraded when you install Tivoli Storage Manager. It must remain installed on the system so that Tivoli Storage Manager can be updated or uninstalled later as needed.

The following list contains explanations of some terms that are used in IBM Installation Manager:
Offering
An installable unit of a software product.

The Tivoli Storage Manager offering contains all of the media that IBM Installation Manager requires to install Tivoli Storage Manager.

Package
The group of software components that are required to install an offering.
The Tivoli Storage Manager package contains the following components:
  • IBM Installation Manager installation program
  • Tivoli Storage Manager offering
Package group
A set of packages that share a common parent directory.

The default package group for the Tivoli Storage Manager package is IBM Installation Manager.

Repository
A remote or local storage area for data and other application resources.

The Tivoli Storage Manager package is stored in a repository on IBM Fix Central.

Shared resources directory
A directory that contains software files or plug-ins that are shared by packages.

IBM Installation Manager stores installation-related files in the shared resources directory, including files that are used for rolling back to a previous version of Tivoli Storage Manager.
