Migrating the Technical Support Appliance

TSA provides the ability to update to newer releases using the Update page. The Update page can be accessed by selecting Administration -> Update from the left navigation menu. An example of an update would be to move from TSA 3.0.0.0 to TSA 3.1.0.0.TSA does not provide the ability to directly update from one version to a new version. For example, TSA cannot update from TSA 2.11.0.0 to TSA 3.x.0.0.TSA does provide a migration process where configuration data from TSA 2.11.0.0 can be saved using the backup function, then restored on a new TSA 3.x.0.0 installation. Depending on what your current installed TSA version and release are, some additional steps to complete the migration may be necessary. Virtual machine images for both TSA 2.11.0.0 and TSA 3.x.x.x are available on the IBM Fix Central website.

Before you begin

The following is a high-level outline of the steps required:

  • This step is required if the installed release of TSA is 1.7.3.1; otherwise skip to next step:
    • Perform a backup of the TSA configuration of the installed TSA 1.7.3.1 virtual machine.
    • Shutdown the TSA 1.7.3.1 virtual machine. Do not restart the virtual machine to avoid conflicts with two instances of TSA using the same IP address.
    • Install TSA 2.11.0.0 in a new virtual machine.
    • Restore configuration on the new TSA 2.11.0.0 virtual machine.
  • This step is required if the installed version of TSA is version 2, but the release is not TSA 2.11.0.0; otherwise skip to next step:
    • Update the TSA 2.x.x.x release to TSA 2.11.0.
  • This step is required for all migrations. An instance of TSA 2.11.0 must exist and be configured before starting this step:
    • Perform a backup of the TSA configuration of the installed TSA 2.11.0.0 virtual machine.
    • Shutdown the TSA 2.11.0.0 virtual machine. Do not restart the virtual machine to avoid conflicts with two instances of TSA using the same IP address.
    • Install TSA 3.x.0.0 in a new virtual machine.
    • Restore configuration on the new TSA 3.x.0.0 virtual machine.
    • After the new TSA 3.x.0.0 virtual machine is working correctly, the old TSA virtual machine(s) can be deleted.

The following sections provide details on how to perform the actions for each required step:

Procedure

  1. Backing up the Technical Support Appliance Configuration: This procedure should be used to perform a backup of the TSA configuration of the currently installed version.
  2. Update the TSA Application to TSA 2.11.0.0.
  3. Restoring the Technical Support Appliance Configuration: After the update to TSA 2.11.0.0, the TSA configuration from an older version of TSA can be restored on TSA 2.11.0.0.
  4. Verifying the Technical Support Appliance Configuration: After the restore process completes, verify whether all configuration settings have been restored and that TSA is working correctly.
  5. Deleting a Technical Support Appliance Image: After the verification of the new version's installation is completed, the old TSA image can be deleted.
