CUIR automation

The control unit initiated reconfiguration (CUIR) function is a LI REQ enabled operation that enables service and unhealthy device information to be automatically communicated with attached z/OS hosts. It automates offline or online device actions to minimize manual operator intervention during selected service actions as well as unhealthy cluster outages during fence operations.

Service preparation

When service-prep is initiated on the cluster, a Distributed Library Notification is surfaced from the cluster. It requests the attached host to vary off the devices automatically when the following conditions are met:
  • All clusters in the grid are at microcode level 8.41.200.xx or later.
  • One or more attached z/OS host logical partitions support CUIR service vary function (APAR OA52376).
  • The CUIR function is enabled by using the following LI REQ command:
    LIBRARY REQUEST,library-name,CUIR,SETTING,SERVICE,ENABLE
When service is canceled and the local cluster comes online, a Distributed Library Notification is surfaced from the cluster. It requests the attached host to vary on the devices automatically when the following conditions are met:
  • All clusters in the grid are at microcode level 8.41.200.xx or later.
  • One or more attached host logical partitions supports CUIR service vary function (APAR OA52376).
  • The CUIR service vary offline attention was previously surfaced as mentioned above.
  • The AONLINE service notification is enabled from the command line, by using the following LI REQ command:
    LIBRARY REQUEST,library-name,CUIR,AONLINE,SERVICE,ENABLE
If the AONLINE SERVICE notification is disabled by the LI REQ command LIBRARY REQUEST,library-name,CUIR,AONLINE,SERVICE,DISABLE, then a blue informational icon is shown on the lower left corner of the cluster image. It alerts the user that the cluster's devices need to be varied online manually.
  1. Select Vary Devices Online from the Actions menu in the cluster summary panel.
  2. Select the cluster you want to vary devices online for and then click OK. Click Cancel to exit without varying devices online.

Unhealthy/fence vary

When a fence operation is initiated on the cluster due to an unhealthy condition or manual fence operation, a Distributed Library Notification is surfaced from one or more clusters. It requests the attached hosts to vary off the devices automatically to the unhealthy cluster when the following conditions are met:
  • All clusters in the grid are at microcode level 8.52.1xx.xx or later.
  • The attached host logical partition supports the CUIR unhealthy vary function (APAR OA60929).
  • The CUIR fence function is enabled using the following LI REQ command:
    LIBRARY REQUEST,library-name,CUIR,SETTING,FENCE,ENABLE
When the cluster is unfenced and the unhealthy cluster returns to an online state, a Distributed Library Notification is surfaced from the previous unhealthy cluster. It requests the attached hosts to vary on the devices automatically when the following conditions are met:
  • All clusters in the grid are at microcode level 8.52.1xx.xx or later.
  • The attached host logical partition supports CUIR unhealthy vary function (APAR OA60929).
  • The CUIR unhealthy vary offline attention was previously surfaced as described above.
  • The AONLINE fence notification is enabled by using the following LI REQ command:
    LIBRARY REQUEST,library-name,CUIR,AONLINE,FENCE,ENABLE
If the AONLINE FENCE notification is disabled by the LI REQ command LIBRARY REQUEST,library-name,CUIR,AONLINE,FENCE,DISABLE, then a blue informational icon is shown on the lower left corner of the cluster image. It alerts the user that the cluster's devices need to be varied online manually.
  1. Select Vary Devices Online from the Actions menu in the cluster summary panel.
  2. Select the cluster you want to vary devices online for and then click OK. Click Cancel to exit without varying devices online.
Note: Only after a cluster has exited the fenced state, the CUIR fence vary online attention is attempted. You may need to manually unfence the cluster before devices can be varied online. For more information, refer to Fence or Unfence clusters.
