TS7770 Storage Expansion Frame

The TS7770 Storage Expansion Frame is a 3952 Tape Frame designated as a cache expansion frame for use with a fully configured TS7770 Base Frame.

The TS7770 Storage Expansion Frame enables expansion of the TS7770 Cache by attaching up to two more storage frames. Each frame contains one or two additional TS7770 Cache Controllers. Each controller can attach to a maximum of 9 additional TS7770 Cache Drawers, resulting in a maximum addition of 20 TS7770 Cache units within each TS7770 Storage Expansion Frame. A maximally configured TS7770 Base Frame with two attached and maximally configured TS7770 Storage Expansion Frames contains 50 total cache units.

A TS7770 Cache Controller and up to nine attached TS7770 Cache Drawers are referred to as a "string", with each TS7770 Cache Controller acting as the "head of [the] string". A single TS7770 can have up to five "strings" attached, the first in the base frame (base string) and the next four in the expansion frames (strings 1 and 2 in frame 1 and strings 3 and 4 in frame 2).

The distance between the first or second TS7770 Storage Expansion Frame and the TS7770 Base Frame cannot exceed 10 meters. This distance permits connection of the frames by using a 30-meter cable.

The TS7770 Storage Expansion Frame consists of the following components:
  • One 3952 Tape Frame
  • One TS7770 Cache Controller (3956-CSB)
  • Optional attachment of up to 9 TS7770 Cache Drawers (3956-XSB)
  • Optional attachment of a second TS7770 Cache Controller (3956-CSB)
  • Optional attachment of up to 9 TS7770 Cache Drawers (3956-XSB) to the second TS7770 Cache Controller
  • Each TS7770 Cache Controller (3956-CSB) or Cache Drawer (3956-XSB) contains 12 DDMs with a raw storage capacity of 10 TB per DDM

  • minimum configuration - two cache enclosures ( one 3956-CSB and one 3956-XSB )
  • maximum configuration - ten cache enclosures ( one 3956-CSB and nine 3956-XSB )
Note:
  1. All cache enclosures are shipped from manufacturing in pairs.
  2. If string 2 hardware is being added to an existing frame then it will be installed in pairs.
  3. Any additional cache enclosures will be installed in pairs.
