Operator information messages

This topic defines the intervention and informational messages for Library, Media, Tape Drive, Library Manager, TS7700, and Controller that are used by an operator or storage administrator.

During normal and exception processing, intervention or action by an operator or storage administrator may be required. The intervention or action requires immediate attention to continue library processing or something that can be handled later. A TS7700 product can also generate informational messages. Informational messages provide information about an operation that is taking place within the machine that might require operator action. Informational messages are always sent to the available notification channels by default.

When these conditions or events are encountered, a text message is logged to the available notification channels: host console, MI event page, SNMP, and RSyslog. You can view and monitor these messages (Event, Host Message, or Call Home MDE) through the host console and the events by using the Events panel on the TS7700 MI. You can also view and modify these messages by using the Notification Settings panel on the TS7700 MI. The Notifications Settings panel also works as a catalog to search for descriptions of Event, Host Message, or Call Home MDE. From this panel, you can set up to send the text messages to all the hosts attached to the subsystem by enabling the Host Notification option. These text messages can be monitored through the host console, TS7700 web interface, SNMP and/or RSyslog which are called notification channels.

To set up to send all messages to the hosts attached to a TS7700, go to the Notification Settings panel and select Actions > Modify Host Notification State by Cluster. See Figure 1 for an example of the Notification Settings panel that is displayed on the TS7700 MI.

From the Modify Host Notification State by Cluster dialog box, select Cluster Name, Active, and then click OK. See Figure 2.

Notification messages

There are three types of notifications that are generated by the system:
  • Events (OPxxxx messages in a CBR3750I message in the host)
  • Host Message (Gxxxx, ALxxxx, EXXXX, Rxxxx in a CBR3750I message in the host)
  • Call Home MDE in SIM (in a IEA480E message in the host)
In addition to notifications described above, the z/OS® platform also supports displaying the following host console message:
CBR3750I Message from library library-name: message-text:Severity Impact: severity-impact-text*. Customer impact: customer-impact-text*
Where:
  • library-name identifies the source of the message. Messages can come from a native library partition or the composite or distributed libraries in a TS7700. This is an eight-character library name that was previously defined on library definitions panels through z/OS.
  • message-text contains the information being provided. It includes a five-character message ID field that can be examined by message automation software to filter or route specific messages. Message-text can be up to 240 characters in length.
  • severity-impact-text describes the severity of the message. See Table 1.
  • customer-impact-text contains an optional information customer can set up through TS7700 MI Notification Settings interface. If the user (customer) provides a custom severity as part of the Notification Settings table on the TS7700 MI, the custom severity is included in this field.
For a Call Home MDE, the system generates an IEA480E message. IEA480E is a Service Information Message (SIM) console message and has the following format:
IEA480E Message yyyy,{TLIB | TCU | TVIR | TAPE}, mt, {ACUTE | SERIOUS | MODERATE | SERVICE} ALERT,
 SER=mmpp-sssss, MC=mc, ES=es, ID=id, REF= ref1-ref2-ref3, UM=um1-um2-um3, {CLEAN | CLEAN/SERVICE | CLEANED} , REPEATED
The Call Home MDE is part of SIM REFCODE= nnnn-nnnn-nnnn. The following diagram is an example of how to locate the MDE code:
  REFCODE 1 REFCODE 2 REFCODE 3
   E 0 0 0 7 0 3 5 0 0 0 0
       | | | | | |
        V --+-- --+--
        | | |
     Unused MDE = 7035 data = 0000
Note: The host message contains only the MDE code. To view the description of MDE, use the Notification Settings panel on the TS7700 MI.
For more information about SIMS, refer to Service information messages.

Message severity

For each message, a severity code is assigned based on the action required and potential to impact operations. The following table describes message severity and the action that needs to be taken:
Table 1. Message severity
Impact Description Action
Critical Operations in the reporting TS7700/Library are stopped, all jobs allocated may fail. Immediate action by operator, system administrator or service representative is needed.
Serious/Error One or more jobs may fail, some virtual volumes may be inaccessible, mounts are suspended, performance may be degraded. Important to examine message, take action as needed.
Impact No immediate impact to operations, but ejects cannot proceed, input station processing problem, early warning for serious type interventions including performance degradation, copies may not be performed or are degraded. Examine message as time allows.
Warning No immediate impact to operations, redundant resource lost, installation/configuration problem or change, drive cleaning may be impacted. Examine message as time allows.
Information Informational message about operations in TS7700/Library Log for historical review.

Message product area

The product area associated with the message is also listed and it could be used to decide who to evaluate the message. The product areas are:
  • Library - regarding a physical library
  • Media - regarding a physical tape cartridge
  • Tape Drive - regarding a physical tape device
  • Library Manager - regarding a library manager code and hardware
  • TS7700 - regarding the TS7700 code and hardware
  • Controller - regarding the controller code or hardware

Intervention message text

The following table describes the intervention message texts:

The Trigger Type (TT) column provides guidelines on which interventions or events would be monitored by host automation. The column indicates whether the event is a setting of a condition (“C” or “S”) or a clearing of a condition (“c” or “r”). The column also indicates whether the intervention or event is a customer (“C” and “c”) responsibility or an IBM (“S” and “r”) responsibility.
  • C – Customer responsibility – Condition is set
  • c – Customer responsibility – Condition is cleared
  • S – IBM responsibility – Condition is set – Notify IBM
  • r – IBM Responsibility – Condition is reset – Notify IBM
  • Blank – requires no trigger

Notes:
  1. Two impact levels are listed. The first has to do with the physical library the condition occurred in. The second impact is if there is a TS7700 that the host is connected to.
  2. Two impact levels are listed. The first one is if communication is lost to just one of the two encryption key servers. The second is if communication is lost to both encryption key servers.
