Limitations of Early Development Testing for z/OS
Check out the limitations of the Early Development Testing for z/OS component of IBM Test Accelerator for Z.
Language and subsystem support limitations
- PL/I programs are not supported
- HLASM programs are not supported.
- IBM MQ is not supported.
- EXEC DLI is not supported for Unit and Component Test.
- Recording and replaying CICS PLT programs is not supported.
General limitations
- Delay Debug specified in EQAOPTS within the load library search path is not supported when recording batch test cases.
- The Save all result data option has been removed from the Unit Test preferences.
- Debug and Code Coverage are unavailable during recording.
- Replay of an Component Test with Debug or Code Coverage is not supported.
- If the recording file is held or otherwise unavailable, the Dynamic Test Engine will switch to debugging mode, and no data will be recorded.
- Delay Debug during test case replay is not supported.
- All EBCDIC data is interpreted using IBM-1047 when being converted to UTF-8 for transfer to the client UI. This is not always accurate.
- Support for COBOL file I/O requires recorded data. Supplying user data or a user file for file I/O is not supported.
- COBOL files defined with the EXTERNAL attribute are not supported.
- Program IDs that contain lowercase characters are not supported.
- If you're experiencing test failures due to uninitialized memory segments, add
STO(00,00,00)to yourCEEOPTS. - Programs called by ALIAS name are not supported.
- The following list of programs are considered system utilities and are excluded from being selected for recording in batch steps:

Unit Test editor limitations
- SOM-based object-oriented (OO) COBOL programs are not supported.
- USAGE INDEX is not supported.
- Unit Test does not support the use of COBOL source that contains compiler directives for conditional compilation.
- Unit Test does not support the case when the source has a nested program that has the same data definition of as the source.
- Level 66 items are not supported.
- Pointer items and pointer areas that are parameters of a sub program call are not supported. A pointer item that is set in the program under testing is not supported even if the test data is entered in Test Case Editor after recording.
- The PICTURE phrase of data items is normalized in the Test Case Editor. The data item PIC X(3)9(4)X(2), for example, appears as X(9) in the Test Case Editor. This normalization is based on the COBOL language specification.
- Arrays defined with OCCURS UNBOUNDED are not shown in the Test Case Editor.
- The literal value in the VALUE clause of a level 88 item might not display as defined in the program.
- Data containing DBCS might not display correctly in the result view.
- For the main program, the output value of PROCEDURE DIVISION is not compared by the hex compare.
- For programs that contain uninitialized data items in a parameter, it is possible to get a test failure.
- Partitioned data set members are not supported for input file or expected output file during testing.
- A program that contains multiple file definitions assigned to the same DDNAME is not supported.
- SORT and MERGE are not supported.
- The variable referenced by LENGTH OF cannot be handled as an I/O parameter.
- ENTRY statements in CICS program are not supported.
CICS support limitations
- COMMAREA is not imported into the Test Case Editor for the CICS program using GOBACK.
- CICS programs must have recorded data for Unit Test. Dynamic Test Engine cannot replay a test case for a CICS program with no recorded data.
- A CICS test case must start with a program that has been built with the CICS translator (we need DFHEIBLK and DFHCOMMAREA as parms 1 and 2).
- The following CICS commands are supported as I/O statements:
ABENDASKTIMEASSIGN APPLIDASSIGN CHANNELDELETEDELETEQ TDDELETEQ TSENDBRENDBROWSE CONTAINER(CHANNEL)FORMATTIMEGET CONTAINER(CHANNEL)GETNEXT CONTAINER(CHANNEL)INQUIRE (TDQUEUE)INVOKE WEBSERVICELINKPUT CONTAINER(CHANNEL)RETURNREWRITESENDSTARTSTART (TRANSID)SYNCPOINT ROLLBACKSTARTBRSTARTBROWSE CONTAINER(CHANNEL)UNLOCKWRITEWRITEQ TDWRITEQ TSXCTL
- The following CICS commands are supported as I/O statements with the limitation that the SET
option is not supported:
READREADNEXTREADPREVREADQ TDREADQ TSRECEIVERECEIVE MAPSEND MAPSEND TEXT
- EXEC CICS PUSH/POP HANDLE are not supported.
- If the test target source contains unsupported CICS commands, they are ignored when running a Unit Test case. This might lead to a different result than when running it under CICS.
IMS support limitations
- IMS programs with the following interface types are supported:
- Db2® via EXEC SQL calls
- IMS/DB via CALL CBLTDLI/AIBTDLI
- IMS/GSAM via CALL CBLTDLI/AIBTDLI
- For IMS programs, only input data is imported for AIB. However, these fields are treated as input and output for IMS calls.
- For IMS programs with AIBTDLI calls, the AIB-returned token in the bottom of the AIB mask is not imported. The AIB-returned token is a token returned by the DL/I call.
- Data is not recorded for the CEETDLI interface.
- For IMS programs with AIBTDLI calls that use the PCB as the resource name, the PCB is not rendered in the test case editor.
- PCB is not a user-owned argument. Changing data in PCB might cause an abend or failure in running test case.
Db2 support limitations
- If a recorded SQL statement returned an error, data is not recorded, the program under test might have unexpected errors during replay. During recording, the data does get updated, so if it is subsequently used by the program for other interfaces, we will not have the updated values on replay and the subsequent interface calls will report test failures.
- SQL Indicator variable arrays are not recorded properly.
- The following commands are supported:
SELECTOPENCLOSEFETCHINSERTUPDATEDECLARE CURSORSET hostVarDELETE
- TYPE BINARY and TYPE VARBINARY(COBOL Importer not supported) are not supported.
- TYPES LOB (BLOB, CLOB...) are not supported.
- TYPE DECFLOAT is not supported (no DECFLOAT data type in COBOL).
- "Usage SQL TYPE" is not supported.
Test data generation limitations
- Test Data Generation supports COBOL, not PL/I.
- Test Data Generation cannot generate correct test data when the program contains the followings:
- PERFORM external UNTIL
- INSPECT
- UNSTRING
- STRING expect DELIMITED BY SIZE
- SET for USAGE POINTER data items
- Level 88 items with multiple value definitions
- Random access mode of File I/O
- non 01 data items REDEFINES the base item with larger size
- Data items with SIGN LEADING SEPARATE
- IMS AIBTDLI calls
- IMS CBLTDLI
- EXEC DLI
- CICS HANDLE ABEND
- CICS HANDLE AID
- CICS HANDLE CONDITION
- CICS STARTBR
- CICS READNEXT
- Partially reference of a data item
- USAGE NATIONAL items except PIC N
- ACCEPT with specifying the input device
- CANCEL
- STOP literal
- EXIT PERFORM
- SORT
- MERGE
- FREE
- ALLOCATE
- RELEASE
- RETURN
- ALTER
- ENTRY
- JSON GENERATE
- JSON PARSE
- XML GENERATE
- XML PARSE
- Special register (except RETURN-CODE)
- Operator (except NUMERIC)
- Intrinsic Functions (except UPPER-CASE, LOWER-CASE, DISPLAY-OF, NATIONAL-OF, NUMVAL, INTEGER, MOD, RANDOM, INTEGER-OF-DATE, DATE-OF-INTEGER)
Recording test case data for Unit Tests for batch programs
- The following types of JCLs to run applications are not supported. You must manually update the JCL file by selecting Open JCL and update the content appropriately based on the added comments.
- Nested procedures are not supported.
- Include files defining an EXEC statement are not supported.
- An INCLUDE file statement with the dynamic symbol references as "
// INCLUDE MEMBER=&SYSUID." is not interpreted. It stays unchanged on generating a recording JCL. - Single quotes ' or parentheses () in JCL statements are not correctly interpreted.
- The DLM parameter for in-stream DD is not interpreted. DLM is always assumed to be /*.
- For some Db2 batch applications, Unit Test and Component Test need to interpret the content of the SYSTSIN DD in an application JCL. SYSTSIN DD from a temporary data set is not supported, and the SYMBOLS parameter for the in-stream data is ignored.
