Removing the microprocessor board (system planar) for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.4.3

Complete this task to remove the microprocessor board (system planar) from 3958 DD4 and DD5 servers.

Before you begin

Important: Before you remove the microprocessor board (system planar) from the server, take the following precautions to save data, firmware, and configuration data:
  • Record all system configuration information:
    • IMM IP addresses
    • Vital product data (VPD), displayed in machine reported product data (MRPD)
    • Machine type, model number, and serial number of the server
  • Using the IBM Advanced Settings Utility (ASU), save the system configuration to a file "backup_asu". At the command prompt, type the following command:
    /usr/bin/asu64 save backup_asu
  • Save the system event log to external media. See Saving the system event log for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.4.3.
Note: Make sure that you have a microprocessor insertion tool before you start this removal procedure. The tool is included when you order the microprocessor board.

Procedure

Perform the following steps to remove the microprocessor board (system planar) from the server:

  1. Prepare the system for FRU replacement (see Preparing the system for FRU replacement for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.4.3).
  2. Verify that the server is powered off by checking that the power LED is flashing on the operator information panel. Then, disconnect the power cords and all external cables as necessary to replace the device.
  3. Remove the top cover (see Removing the top cover for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.4.3).
  4. Remove the top cover bracket (see Removing the top cover bracket for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.4.3).
  5. Remove the power supplies (see Removing a hot-swap power supply for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.4.3).
  6. Remove the I/O board shuttle assembly (see Removing the I/O board shuttle for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.4.3).
  7. Disconnect the signal cables from the ServeRAID adapter and remove the adapter (see Removing the RAID controller for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.4.3).
  8. Remove the middle fan (see Removing the middle hot-swap fan for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.4.3).
  9. Remove the memory cards and memory card fillers (see Removing a memory card for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.4.3).
  10. Remove the memory card cage (see Removing the memory card cage for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.4.3).
  11. Disconnect the following cables: front fan, scalability LED, operator information panel, hard disk drive backplane, and CD/DVD power.
  12. If you have a single-node server without a memory expansion module attached, remove the QPI wrap cards or fillers (see Removing a QPI wrap card for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.4.3). If you have a two-node server or a server that is connected to a memory expansion module, disconnect the QPI cables from each end and set them aside in a safe place. Be sure to protect the ends of the QPI cables.
  13. Remove the microprocessors (see Removing a microprocessor and heat sink for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.4.3).
  14. Loosen the thumbscrews  1  on the rear of the server (see Figure 1). If you have a two-node server, you might have four thumbscrews on the rear of the server. One thumbscrew is used to connect the two-node bracket.

  15. Slide the assembly slightly toward the front of the server. Then, using the microprocessor board handle on the left side, lift out the assembly at an angle.
  16. If you are instructed to return the microprocessor board, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
  17. To replace a microprocessor board, see Replacing the microprocessor board (system planar) for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.4.3.
