Installation workflow checklist for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6

This checklist provides a high-level overview of the tasks that are required to successfully install the TS7650G in both stand-alone and clustered configurations.

1–5a For VTL, two IP addresses were assigned for use with stand-alone installation, or three IP addresses were assigned for use with clustered:
  • One for 3958 DD5 Server A (stand-alone and clustered)
  • One for 3958 DD5 Server B (clustered only)
  • One for the TSSC (stand-alone and clustered)
Customer
1–5b For OpenStorage or FSI, up to eight IP addresses were assigned for use in a stand-alone installation. For OpenStorage only, 15 IP addresses were assigned for use in a clustered installation.
  • One for 3958 DD5 Server A (stand-alone and clustered)
  • One for 3958 DD5 Server B (clustered only)
  • One for the TSSC (stand-alone and clustered)
  • Up to 6 (stand-alone OpenStorage or FSI) or 12 (clustered OpenStorage only) for the host network
Customer
1–6 One or more PCs on the local area network (LAN) are designated as ProtecTIER® Manager workstations. Customer

Section 2: Install the gateway components
2–1 Have the customer suspend all I/O activity. Turn off any components that are on. See the component-specific documentation for power-off instructions.
2–2 Install Server A (the bottom or stand-alone server). Installing the ProtecTIER server for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6
2–3 (Clustered only) Install Server B (the top server). Installing the ProtecTIER server for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6, then choose one of the following options:
  • 2-4a, if the customer purchased a TSSC and related equipment that needs to be installed
  • 2-4b, if the customer has an existing TSSC and related equipment that can be used with the gateway
2–4a If the customer purchased a new TSSC, TSSC Ethernet switch, and USB modem, and they are not yet installed, do so now. Go to task 3a-1 (for a stand-alone installation) or 2-5 (for a clustered installation). IBM® System Storage TS7650 with ProtecTIER, TS7650 Appliance and TS7650G (Gateway) Installation of Customer Rackmountable TSSC/Internal Modem/KVM.

Section 3a: Apply cable labels and make cable connections for a stand-alone installation

3a–2 Label and connect stand-alone installation Ethernet connections.
3a–3 Label and connect stand-alone installation Fibre Channel connections. Connecting Fibre Channel cables for the stand-alone TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6, then go to section 4.
Section 3b: Apply cable labels and connect cables for clustered installation

3b–4 Label and connect KVM connections. Follow the KVM cabling instructions that are packaged with the KVM, then go to section 4.
Section 4: Turn on all components
4–1 Turn on the TSSC, display panel, and TSSC Ethernet switch. Powering on the TSSC and KVM components for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6.
4–2 Close the circuit breakers for the power distribution units. N/A
4–3 Turn on the disk expansion modules. Powering up the components for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6.
4–4 Turn on the disk controllers. Powering up the components for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6.
4–5 Turn on Server A. Powering on the servers for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6.
4–6 Turn on Server B. Powering on the servers for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6.
Section 5: Perform postinstallation validation checks
5–1 Check power indicators for all components. Visual inspection of indicator and fault LEDs for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6.
5–2 Validate Ethernet link-up indicators on TSSC. Visual inspection of indicator and fault LEDs for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6.
5–3 Validate Ethernet link-up indicators on the customer network to the server and the TSSC. Visual inspection of indicator and fault LEDs for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6.
5–4 Validate that all links on the internal Ethernet network indicate 1000 Mbps, except for the Ethernet connection to the network power switch, which indicates 100 Mbps.

All connections, except the connection to the network power switch, must be at 1000 Mbps for the cluster configuration to work.

5–5 Validate Fibre Channel link-up indicators from the disk controller to the server. Visual inspection of indicator and fault LEDs for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6.
5–6a For VTL, validate Fibre Channel link-up indicators from customer host to the server. Visual inspection of indicator and fault LEDs for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6.
5–6b For OpenStorage, validate Ethernet link-up indicators from customer host to the server. Visual inspection of indicator and fault LEDs for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6.
Section 6: Prepare the TSSC for use with the TS7650G
6–1 Configure the TSSC communication settings. Setting up the TSSC for use with theTS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6.
Section 7: Perform RAS configuration and verification
7–1 Configure ProtecTIER RAS on the servers. Enabling ProtecTIER RAS functions for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER version 3.3.6.
7–2 Perform RAS verification. Includes verifying attached systems and testing Call Home. RAS verification for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER version 3.3.6.
Section 8: SSR releases the system to trained ProtecTIER specialist or LBS representative
8-1 Configure Server A. Configuring Server A for the TS7650 Appliance or TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6.
8–2 Install ProtecTIER Manager. Installing ProtecTIER Manager on workstations for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6.
8–3 Create the repository. Creating the repository for the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6.
8–4 Configure Server B in a cluster. Configuring Server B for the TS7650 Appliance or TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6.
8–5 Test the clustered system. Validating the servers for the TS7650 Appliance or TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6.
8–6 Update ProtecTIER software on the servers. Applying fixes to update the ProtecTIER software for version 3.3.6 and higher.
8–7 Turn the system over to the customer. If replication is being used, advise the customer that it is their responsibility to create and configure the replication grid. Releasing the TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6 system to the customer
