Density charts
This topic describes features that are available in the new design of the user interface. This
new design is enabled by default. If you switched to the legacy design, click in the navigation bar of the user interface and then turn on the toggle to
re-enable the new design. For more information, see New Design for the User Interface.
Density charts show the number of resource consumers (virtual machines or containers) per provider (host or storage). If available, choose the Show Density checkbox to see the ratio of consumers to providers.
These charts also show the desired count of virtual machines, assuming you want to fill the headroom completely. Note that the Desired Workloads values are the results of running plans. These plans can calculate workload moves within a cluster to gain more efficiency, but they always respect the cluster boundaries – the plans never move VMs to hosts on different clusters.
To display relevant data, you must set the scope to your global environment or a cluster group. Other scopes are not supported.
You can choose from the following types of charts:
-
Virtual Machines vs Hosts
This chart shows the total number of virtual machines and hosts in your on-prem environment, and tracks the data over time.
Hover on a number in the chart to see a breakdown by resource status. For example, you can see how many virtual machines are currently active, idle, or suspended. To see the number of virtual machines per host, edit the chart and select the Show Density option.
-
Virtual Machines vs Hosts - Density
This chart shows the number of virtual machines per host in your on-prem environment, and tracks the data over time. A high number means that your virtual machines are densely packed, and you can take steps to alleviate pressure on the resource providers.
If the scope of the chart is a discovered group that is based on host clusters, both historical and current density data appears. If the discovered group is not based on host clusters, only current density data appears.
Hover on the number in the chart to see a breakdown by host status. For example, you can see how many hosts are currently active or under maintenance.
-
Virtual Machines vs Storage
This chart shows the total number of virtual machines and storage in your on-prem environment, and tracks the data over time.
Hover on a number in the chart to see a breakdown by resource status. For example, you can see how many virtual machines are currently active, idle, or suspended. To see the number of virtual machines per host, edit the chart and select the Show Density option.

Virtual Machines vs Storage - Density
This chart shows the number of virtual machines per storage in your on-prem environment, and tracks the data over time. A high number means that your virtual machines are densely packed, and you can take steps to alleviate pressure on the resource providers.
Hover on the number in the chart to see a breakdown by storage status. For example, you can see how many storage devices are currently active.
-
Containers vs Hosts
This chart shows the total number of containers and hosts in your on-prem environment, and tracks the data over time.
Hover on a number in the chart to see a breakdown by resource status. For example, you can see how many containers are currently active or idle. To see the number of containers per host, edit the chart and select the Show Density option.

Virtual Machines vs Hosts and Storage
This chart shows the total number of virtual machines, hosts, and storage in your on-prem environment, and tracks the data over time. Chart information helps you understand and make decisions around capacity and utilization, based on historical and projected demand.
This chart appears in both dashboards and plan results. If you are viewing this chart in a dashboard, you can hover on a number in the chart to see a breakdown by resource status. For example, you can see how many virtual machines are currently active, idle, or suspended. To see the number of virtual machines per host and storage, edit the chart and select the Show Density option.

Headroom
This chart shows the total number of virtual machines running in the chart's scope, plus the total headroom (capacity) for that scope. With this chart, you can see if there is extra capacity in your clusters to host workloads.

Host and Storage Units
This chart shows the number of active hosts and storage devices, and tracks the data over time.
