9. Microsoft Project import and export

9.1 How do you import Microsoft Project files?

You can import project files from Microsoft Project into the Gantt scheduler. You can also export projects from the Gantt scheduler and import them into Microsoft Project. When tasks are imported from Microsoft Project into the TRIRIGA project, the # column in the task table of the Gantt scheduler displays a non-zero number. When you create a task directly in the Gantt scheduler, the # column displays a 0.

To import a Microsoft Project project into the Gantt scheduler, perform the following steps:

Step 1. Open an existing TRIRIGA project or create a project, complete the required fields, and click Create Draft.

Note: Import settings

By default, the import process adopts the TRIRIGA project plan start date for the import. If you want to retain the original planned start date from the Microsoft Project MPP file, clear the TRIRIGA project plan start date, and save the project before you go to Step 2.

The Microsoft Project import will not automatically schedule the imported project plan if the TRIRIGA server is using GANTT_STRICT_MODE=MINIMAL or FALSE. The Gantt scheduler will do the scheduling.

Step 2. Click the Import From MS Project action.

Step 3. In the Project Importer, in the Details section of the General tab, click the Import File icon and select an MPP file.

Step 4. Select a Task Type for the imported tasks (Schedule, Work, or Inspection).

Step 5. Click Import.

9.2 How do you export Microsoft Project files?

A project can be created in the Gantt scheduler and exported into Microsoft Project. The existing tasks and imported tasks can be edited in the Gantt scheduler as needed. New tasks can be added and tasks can be removed. The project can then be exported for review or modification in Microsoft Project.

To export the TRIRIGA project for Microsoft Project, perform the following steps:

Step 1. Click the Export to MS Project action.

Step 2. Select an export format (XML or MPX).

Step 3. Click Export.

Note: Export file formats

Microsoft Project 2013 and higher versions no longer support MPX format. If you export to MPX format from TRIRIGA, you need to use a third-party tool to convert the file from MPX to MPP to be able to open the file in Microsoft Project 2013 and higher versions.

Other options include exporting to XML format, or importing the MPX file into an older version of Microsoft Project.
