Shipping and packaging specifications
The rack mount is packaged and shipped in a pod configuration; one or more stacked pods, depending on the system configuration ordered.
The systems are shipped in a palletized set of pods for protection during transportation, and for
ease of component removal and installation into a customer's rack in their data center. The packaged
shipping considerations and specifications are as follows:
- The system configuration is pretested as a full system in manufacturing as pods, before shipping.
- Two different pod sizes are used (6U or 9U), with a maximum of three interconnected per pallet.
- Each pod group is shipped on a plastic pallet and is fully enclosed in plastic corrugate sleeves. The pods and their packaging contain no combustible materials, thus promoting admissibility into the data center.
- Each pod is topped with a poly sheet and is stretch wrapped around the girth to the bottom of
the crate, following the installation of the pod's plastic corrugate sleeves.
- Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitor (VpCI) cups are included in the pod container to prevent corrosion or rusting of metal components.
- The pods shall not be used for permanent system installation and operation.
-
CAUTION:Depending on the configuration that is ordered, your product or products might have been shipped in an orange temporary structure. The products are not intended for operation as shipped. Remove all Information Technology Equipment from the orange shipping structure before use. The orange shipping structure does not meet end-product safety requirements for flammability, electrical bonding, or tip stability. Using the temporary shipping structure for the final product or products installation might result in personal injury, fire, property damage, or all. Follow all included instructions and do not leave your products permanently installed in the orange structure. (C055)

Planning for system packaging and return packaging
Important: Depending on your specific system configuration, the rack mount might require
additional packaging equipment to ensure safe system transport. This additional packaging will
likely be large in size and must be planned for accordingly. Discuss the required storage
space for your specific system configuration with your IBM®
marketing representative or Business Partner.
The pods are targeted to be returnable (NA and EMEA) to minimize excess packaging and/or need for disposal.
- For Domestic US, the SSR can use the same process as we do for the ARBO crate. The process is to contact Geodis via an email and then they come back to the customer location and pick it up. Geodis then returns them to Poughkeepsie for reuse.
- For Canada, the process would be similar. The pod's will be returned to IBM Markham Ontario, consolidated, and then shipped back to Poughkeepsie.
- For EMEA, we will be using the same process GARS uses to return systems and crates back to Poughkeepsie. This ETO process will consolidate the empty pod's along with returning systems and empty ARBO crates in Germany and then ship them back to Poughkeepsie via Ocean.
- All other Geo’s the pod's will be removed from the customer location and then disposed of in country due to low anticipated volumes.
