Sales considerations

As part of your system sales and planning activity, you must take the following requirements into careful consideration prior to the sale of your rack mount offering.

  • IBM z16, machine type 3932, provides a scalable, sustainable, highly available platform that delivers differentiated value to help enable business growth, reduce cost, and improve performance efficiency. It provides:
    • 19-inch form factor available in either a single frame (IBM rack) or rack mount (components can be inserted into an existing client rack).
    • Up to 68 cores. The new IBM Telum processor using 7nm technology runs at 4.6GHz processor frequency. The new processor is supported by a Dual Chip Module driving an integrated Nest and Cache architecture, and new integrated AI Accelerators for high speed inferencing in addition to the cryptography, compression, and sort accelerators.
    • Up to 8TB RAIM memory per CPC drawer for up to 16TB per machine all supported by physical memory encryption, NVMe 1.1, enhanced computing for TKE, Coupling Express Long Reach (Coupling Express2 LR), and Crypto Express8S allowing for Quantum-Safe system and HSM encryption.
  • Utilization of z16 single frame requires planning and prior provisioning of storage devices, networks, power, operating systems, programs, floor space, air conditioning, programmers, and support staff. Before the sale, confirm that the following required conditions are present. Failure to meet these conditions will result in the sale of equipment that cannot be installed.

The client must confirm the following before a sale can be considered, as there is no possible recovery:

    • Single phase AC voltage at the Power Distribution Unit (PDU) outlet must be between 200 and 250VAC. This prohibits 3 Phase 480VAC at the PDU power cord. The maximum 3 phase voltage as PDU input is limited to 415VAC.
    • Each PDU outlet is measured to ensure that voltage of 200-250VAC is present. Mis-wired 3 phase WYE would put 415VAC to certain outlets and will cause a hazardous situation by over voltaging the power supplies.
    • PDUs are wired to redundant power sources.
  • The rack mount offering has some additional requirements. The rack mount drawers are designed to fit IBM racks with IBM PDUs. Before the sale, confirm that the following required conditions are present. Failure to meet these conditions will result in the sale of equipment that cannot be installed.

With the environment being outside IBM’s control, the client must confirm the following before a sale can be considered, as there is no possible recovery:

    • The PDUs and the cords plugged into them must not block the removal or adapter cards or power supplies, which are at the extreme edges of the 19" drawer.
    • There must be 8" of space between the rear EIA rail and the rear door.
    • The rack cannot be against a wall or structure which would prohibit standing on both sides of the 19" rack.
    • The data center must allow the use of the Genie Lift Tool GL-8 to install server rack mount bundle components.
    • The client must submit to IBM, for the SSR, a detailed list of exactly which PDU outlet each "ordered" power jumper will plug into.
Note: To determine which PDU outlets are for which ordered power jumpers, the client must follow the education in the Installation Manual for Physical Planning (IMPP). This education covers taking a sample configuration through the IBM Power Estimator tool to determine the amps required for the actual AC voltage, and the connector type and quantity of power jumpers. It also helps clients understand electrical de-ratings and PDU internal wiring. If not properly planned, circuit breakers might trip and cause an unexpected outage during normal operation or during a power failure.
