Understanding remote development

IBM® Streams Studio supports a remote development environment where you can install Streams Studio on a local Linux or Windows system that accesses a remote Linux system where IBM Streams is installed.

About this task

The IBM Streams runtime system, the SPL compiler, and the SPL toolkits are at the remote Linux system. Streams Studio includes Remote System Explorer (RSE), which is an Eclipse project and a perspective that provides connectivity to the remote Linux system for buildingstreams processing applications. After you establish a connection with the remote Linux system, you can use Streams Studio, which is installed on your local Linux or Windows system, for developing streams processing applications remotely.
Restriction: For remote development from a Windows system, you must install Streams Studio on Windows 7 64-bit.
  • Local and remote workspaces in Streams Studio
    A local workspace is a directory that contains your Eclipse workspace. A remote workspace is a directory on the remote Linux system where IBM Streams is installed. A remote workspace exists only in the context of remote development.
  • Remote context
    The SPL projects in your local workspace require a remote context so that the SPL artifacts can be replicated to the remote workspace. When you build or run an SPL application, the remote context is used to locate the SPL project resources on the remote system.
  • Changing the location of a remote workspace
    You can change the location of the default remote workspace by specifying a location on the Linux system where IBM Streams is installed. The remote workspace must be on the same system where IBM Streams is installed.
  • Synchronizing local and remote workspaces
    Streams Studio synchronizes local and remote workspaces by pushing local changes to the remote workspace and by pulling build artifacts to the local workspace after a build.
  • Managing remote system connections
    Use the Remote System Explorer view to manage your remote connections. This view provides a tree view of the remote connections from where you can create or delete RSE connection to the remote system.
