Tech Stack Upgrade

When planning to do a tech stack upgrade for your setup, take a backup of the existing environment, upgrade the operating system, followed by the WebSphere Application Server, and Java. If you have Reporting in your setup, take a backup of the Cognos and InfoSphere DataStage artifacts.

Compatibility of the new tech stack

Before you upgrade to the new tech stack, make sure that the tech stack is compatible with the old and new version of the Emptoris applications. If it is compatible, you can proceed to upgrade on the existing systems.

If the new tech stack is not compatible with the older version, it is recommended that you upgrade it on new systems.

Steps for tech stack upgrade

The following table lists the steps that you must follow for upgrading the tech stack.

Operating system This must be the first item to be upgraded.
  1. Check whether the new operating system is supported for the old and new version of the Emptoris applications.
  2. If the new operating system is supported on the older version, proceed to upgrade on the existing system.
  3. If the new operating system is not supported on the older version, use a new system for the new operating system, and upgrade the Emptoris applications on the new system.
WebSphere Application Server Each application node that requires the WebSphere Application Server upgrade must be upgraded.
  1. If supported on older and new version of the application, proceed to upgrade on the existing system.
  2. If the new version of the WebSphere Application Server is not supported on the older version, use a new system for the new version, and upgrade the Emptoris applications on the new system.
Java Multiple versions of Java can exist on the same system. It is not necessary to use a new system for upgrading Java.
Cognos
  1. If supported on older and new version of the application, proceed to upgrade on the existing system.
  2. If the new version of Cognos is not supported on the older version, use a new system for the new version of Cognos, and upgrade the Emptoris applications on the new system.
InfoSphere DataStage InfoSphere DataStage cannot be upgraded on the same system. Upgrade to the new version on a new system.
