Creating an API key

To install the IBM Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud software with the one-click installer requires an API key with reduced privileges. Before you run the one-click installation tool, you must create the API key.

IBM Cloud® supports different types of API keys that grant users privileges in the IBM Cloud environment. One IBM Cloud API key is used when you purchase and provision IBM Cloud resources, like bare metal servers and block storage. This API key gives the power to purchase components. To prevent the installer from purchasing components in error, create a reduced-privileges API key, which is known as an infrastructure key. The infrastructure API key is used during installation to complete automatically the following installation and configuration actions:
  • Discovering passwords of bare metal servers
  • Allocating a range of IP addresses for the system
  • Completing post-installation tasks
  • Configuring cloud storage for the system
To create an infrastructure key for the IBM Cloud, complete these steps:
  1. Log in to the IBM Cloud portal.
  2. Select Manage > Access (IAM) > IBM Cloud API keys.
  3. Select your API Key and click details to find your user credentials.
Note: To create a separate user, click Create an IBM Cloud API key, and enter the information to define the new user.
  4. On the Classic infrastructure API key details page, copy the key into your system buffer.
