Replication by using the manual updates mode of the AFM to cloud object storage

IBM Storage Scale provides a powerful solution for managing large-scale file systems across multiple nodes and sites. The replication at the file system level by using the AFM to cloud object storage provides a reliable and efficient solution for replicating or tiering data from a file system to a cloud-based object storage system.

The IBM Storage Scale file system level replication by using the AFM to cloud object storage in the manual updates mode gives you control over the replication process and you can replicate data from an IBM Storage Scale file system to a cloud object storage manually and automatically by using reconcile policies. For more about information reconciliation, see the Reconciling files between IBM Storage Scale file system and cloud storage tier in the IBM Storage Scale: Administration Guide.

This feature supports the following use cases:
  • Backup and recovery: By replicating data from a file system to a cloud object storage, you can create a backup copy of critical data. In the manual update mode, you have the flexibility to schedule replication based on your backup strategy. This ensures that your data is protected and can be restored in the event of a disaster.
  • Data archival and retention: Storing data for long-term archival and compliance purposes is essential for many organizations. By using the manual updates mode of the AFM to cloud object storage of the replication, you can periodically replicate data to a cloud object storage by ensuring its preservation and adherence to data retention policies. This reduces storage cost on the primary file system while maintaining data accessibility when needed.
  • Migration to a cloud storage: The replication by using the manual updates mode of the AFM to cloud object storage is valuable for migrating data from on-premises file systems to a cloud storage. You can tier the data incrementally, validating each step before you initiate the replication process. This approach allows a smooth transition and minimizes impact on ongoing operations.
  • Data analysis and processing: When you analyze data or process tasks, it is often beneficial to replicate relevant data to a cloud storage. By using the manual updates mode of the AFM to cloud object storage for the replication, you can choose time to replicate data. It ensures that the most up-to-date information is available for processing, without any impact on running operations.
  • Hybrid cloud storage: The replication by using the manual updates mode of the AFM to cloud object storage replication is ideal for hybrid cloud storage, where you have a combination of on-premises file systems and cloud-based storage. When this feature is enabled, you can synchronize data between the two environments based on your requirement, and it ensures that data is consistent across locations.
