First-time data capture for CES NFS

First-time data capture (FTDC) enhancements collect diagnostics and performance data from Cluster Export Services (CES) NFS environments to reduce investigation time and improve problem analysis.

Overview

In large-scale NFS environments, diagnosing issues often requires collecting diagnostic data from multiple components, including CES NFS services, protocol statistics, server state information, and client activity logs. Manually gathering this data can be time-consuming and can delay troubleshooting.

To simplify problem determination, IBM Storage Scale CES NFS provides enhancements to the FTDC framework for NFS-Ganesha environments. These new configuration options help automate the collection of key diagnostic and performance data during issue investigation.

FTDC use

  • Automatically collects diagnostic information during failures or performance issues.
  • Improves visibility into CES NFS server behavior and workloads.
  • Standardizes data collection for troubleshooting and support.
  • Reduces the time required to analyze production issues.

Scope

For the following components, FTDC enhancements apply only to diagnostic data collection and monitoring behavior:
  • IBM Storage Scale 6.0.1.
  • CES NFS environments that use NFS-Ganesha.
  • Systems where the mmsysmon service is active.
This feature includes two main functions.
NFS statistics collection
You can collect NFS-Ganesha performance and memory statistics through mmsysmon by using the ganesha_stats utility.

Enhanced debug data collection for hang scenarios
You can collect a Ganesha core dump, GPFS trace data, or both when NFS-Ganesha becomes unresponsive.
