Configuring the host PC

Prepare the host PC to establish a console connection to the switch so that initial configuration can be performed.

  1. Ensure that the USB-to-serial cable driver is installed on the PC.
  2. Open device manager and verify that the USB-to-serial cable is assigned a COM port.
  3. Open putty.exe and configure the COM port connection.

Configure PuTTY with the following settings:

    Baud rate 115200
    Parity None
    Stop bits 1
    Data bits 8
    Flow control None
  4. Power on the switch and wait for the login prompt.
  5. Log in with the default credentials.
    User ID
    cumulus
    Password
    <11S serial number>
If the switch uses Mellanox defaults, use:
    User ID
    cumulus
    Password
    CumulusLinux!
  6. Download the H48712_interfaces.rtf VLAN configuration file from https://ibm.box.com/v/H48712interfaces.

If the configuration file link is unavailable, check the following output:

    H48712_interfaces.rtf:

    # and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

  7. Gain sudo rights.
    sudo su -
  8. Copy the VLAN configuration file contents into /etc/network/interfaces.

Edit the file by using vi or any preferred editor.

  9. Reload interfaces and verify status.
    ifreload -a
    ifquery -a
  10. Check VLAN setup.
    net show interface all
  11. Configure switch network settings, if required.
net add interface eth0 IP address 192.168.44.20/24
net add interface eth0 IP gateway 192.168.44.1
    net pending
    net commit
  12. Set the VLAN tag on each server canister.

    Required VLAN tag: 101

    /bin/ipmitool lan set 1 vlan id 101
  13. Confirm the VLAN tag.
    /bin/ipmitool lan print 1 | grep -i 'VLAN ID'
