VMware virtual machine requirements and limitations
This topic describes the requirements for storage hardware and software that can be used with IBM Storage Scale Erasure Code Edition on VMware virtual machine.
Hardware requirements and limitations
This section describes the minimum requirements and limitations to run IBM Storage Scale Erasure Code Edition on a VMware virtual machine.
For more information on minimum hardware requirements to run IBM Storage Scale Erasure Code Edition, see Minimum hardware requirements and precheck.
IBM Storage Scale Erasure Code Edition has some additional requirements on CPU, disk drive, network, and storage adapter.
Hardware | Description |
---|---|
CPU | 16 VMware virtual CPU |
SAS Data Drives | Physical drives must follow general hardware requirements and use Raw Device Mapping (RDM) with physical compatibility mode for VM local disk drive |
NVMe Data Drives | Physical drives must follow general hardware requirements and use pass through enabled device as VM local PCIe NVMe device |
Network Adapter | Physical network cards must follow general hardware requirements and use SR-IOV enabled device as VM network adapter |
SAS Storage Adapters/Controllers | Physical SAS card must follow general hardware requirements and use VMware supported storage adapters |
Software requirements
This section describes the recommended software version to run IBM Storage Scale Erasure Code Edition on VMware virtual machine.
Software | Version |
---|---|
VMware ESXi | VMware ESXi 7 (7.0.3 or later) |
VMware vSphere Client | VMware vSphere 7 (7.0.3 or later) |
Operator System | RHEL 8.2 or later |
Storage Scale | 5.1.4.0 or later |
Limitations
This section describes the limitations.
- Each ESXi host can run only one ECE storage server VM. Deploying more than one ECE storage virtual machine on one physical server will cause data integrity issues in the event of physical server failure.
- Migrating ECE storage server VM from one ESXi host to another host is not supported.
