Creating a retention set

You can create a retention set to ensure that the active backup data for specified clients is retained.

About this task

A retention set can be created according to the scheduled frequency that is defined by a retention rule. Retention rules are designed to meet requirements for collecting data on a recurring basis. For example, you might be required to collect financial records regularly at quarterly or year-end fiscal boundaries. A retention rule defines the frequency for creating retention sets. A retention rule also defines a template for creating retention sets, describing the clients for which active backup data must be retained and the retention period for that data. If a retention rule is active, the server regularly creates retention sets according to the rule frequency.

You can also explicitly create a one-time retention set from a retention rule or from the Clients page. Create one-time retention sets to meet requirements to collect data only once, usually in response to an event. For example, you might be required to collect data only once, following an event like a contract expiring or an employee leaving your organization.
