Creating a one-time retention set for selected clients
You can create a one-time retention set from the Clients page to meet requirements to collect active data from specified clients on a non-recurring basis.
About this task
A retention set is a snapshot of the active backup data for one or more clients. You can create a retention set from the Clients page to retain the current active backup data for clients that you select. This capability is intended to meet requirements to collect data after an event like a contract expiring or an employee leaving your organization. Unlike a retention rule, active backup data for the clients is not collected on a recurring basis. If you have requirements to collect data at regular intervals, create a retention rule instead of a one-time retention set.
When you create a one-time retention set, you select the clients whose active backup data is to be retained and then specify the retention period. The retention period determines the expiration date for the retention set. To create the retention set on tape or in cloud object storage, you specify a retention storage pool.
Procedure
To create a one-time retention set, complete the following steps:
-
On the Operations Center menu bar, click Clients.
The Clients page opens.
- In the Clients table, select one or more clients whose active backup data is to be retained.
- Click .
- On the Create Retention Set page, specify a name for the retention set and a retention period.
- On the Create Retention Set page, click Create.
Results
If you did not specify a retention storage pool, then the retention set is an in-place retention set. The backup data objects remain in primary storage and cannot be deleted until the retention set's expiration date. Movement of the data between primary storage pools is not restricted; only the deletion of data is restricted.
If you specified a retention pool, the retention set is initially created in place in primary storage. Later, the retention-copy storage rule that is associated with the retention storage pool runs to copy the retention set to the retention storage pool. The retention-copy storage rule runs daily. If the retention set is not fully copied to tape or cloud storage during its processing window, the copying is resumed the next time the retention-copy storage rule runs.
What to do next
To view the status of the retention set, open the Retention Sets page. On the Operations Center menu bar, click . The Created By column of the table shows the name that you specified for the retention set on the Create Retention Set page.
