Adding directories to a container storage pool

Add disk capacity to a container storage pool by assigning file system directories to the pool.

About this task

For directory-container storage pools, the directories define the storage pool size.

For cloud-container storage pools, the directories define the size of a disk cache that is used to optimize data transfer to the cloud.

The size of a directory-container storage pool or the cache size of a cloud-container storage pool is determined by the capacity of the directory file systems. For cloud-container storage pools, the data is held only temporarily on disk. After the data is transferred to the cloud, the data is deleted from the directory cache. For this reason, less file system capacity is required for cloud-container storage pools than is required for directory-container storage pools. Data that is written to a container storage pool is distributed across the directories. This distribution can improve I/O performance, but only if the storage pool directories map to different physical disks. Each additional physical disk that you identify can increase parallelism and improve I/O performance.

Procedure

To add one or more directories to a container storage pool, complete the following steps:

  1. On the Storage Pools page, select the container storage pool.
  2. Click Details, and then click the Directories tab.
  3. Click + Directories.
  4. In the Add Directories window, specify one or more directories. Enter a fully-qualified path name that conforms to the syntax that is used by the server operating system. For example, enter /tmp/dir1/ for AIX® or Linux® operating systems, or c:\temp\dir1\ for Microsoft Windows.
  5. Click Add Directories.
