Manually backing up clients

You might want to manually start a client backup if, for example, the last scheduled backup failed, or if you recently registered the client, and a backup did not yet start.

Before you begin

The following restrictions apply when you manually back up clients from the Operations Center:

  • You can back up clients only if the scheduling mode is set to PROMPTED on the IBM® Storage Protect server that manages the clients.
Tip: For information about how to view the server scheduling mode and about how to back up clients when the scheduling mode is set to POLLING or ANY, see the relevant links later on this page.
  • You cannot back up the following types of client:
    • Network-attached storage (NAS) clients
    • Virtual machines
    • Data center nodes
  • You can run only the following types of backup:
    • Incremental
    • Selective
    • Command
    • Macro
  • Each client must be associated with an IBM Storage Protect schedule.
    • If you want to determine whether a client is associated with a schedule, see "Viewing schedule associations" in the "Related tasks" section later on this page.
    • If you want to assign a client to an IBM Storage Protect schedule, see "Assigning clients to schedules."
  • If a client was never backed up, it must be associated with a single IBM Storage Protect schedule, not with multiple schedules.
Tip: If a client was never backed up and is associated with multiple schedules, you can back it up by issuing the DEFINE CLIENTACTION command.
