Adding hosts

You can add VMware ESXi hosts and their virtual machines for monitoring with IBM Storage Insights by specifying connection information for a vCenter Server. When you add VMware ESXi hosts, you can then collect data, generate reports, and manage storage that is related to hosts and virtual machines.

User and port requirements for adding and monitoring hosts:
  • When you add vCenter Servers for monitoring, you must specify the connection credentials of users that will be used to collect metadata. The users must meet the following requirements:
    • Role: Read Only (minimum). For example, the Administrator role or Virtual Machine Power® User role.
    • Privilege: Browse Datastore

Remember, this user is different from the user that is used to log in to IBM Storage Insights.

  • The following outbound port number is used to connect to hosts: 443. You must configure your firewall to allow outbound communication on HTTPS port 443 using TCP to the IP address of your service.
Important: If your antivirus software prevents the monitoring of some of your hosts, add the related executable files for those devices to your allowlist.

Managing alert conditions and notification settings

When IBM Storage Insights Pro creates agentless servers, the servers are not added automatically to a default alert policy. You can create an alert policy to manage the alert definitions and notification settings for the agentless servers in one place.

You can also create an alert policy from the alert definitions and notification settings of a host. Click Resources > Hosts. Right-click the host from which you want to create an alert policy, and then click View Alert Definitions. Click Create Policy from the Policy Actions menu.
