Adding storage to a STaaS environment

Ensuring that you don't run out of capacity is critical to keeping your STaaS environment and related applications up and running smoothly. By monitoring your upcoming business needs and analyzing trends with your current usable capacity and overages, you can determine if more storage is needed to avoid unexpected shortages.

About this task

Usable capacity is the maximum amount of capacity that the storage system allows you to use on your environment. Use the STaaS dashboard to analyze your upcoming storage needs and compare it to the current usable capacity of your STaaS environment. Start of changeThen, check your used capacity to see if exceeds 75% (IBM Storage FlashSystem) or 85% (DS8000) of your usable capacity.End of change Add more storage to increase the usable capacity in your environment and keep your operations running smoothly.

Procedure

  1. From the Dashboards menu, click Storage as a Service. A list of STaaS environments is displayed.
  2. Double-click the environment that you want to view.
  3. To track your daily capacity usage and overages up to the current day for the month, view the Current Month Usage chart. This chart helps you easily identify daily spikes in capacity usage that exceed your base capacity. With this information, you can determine how often you exceed your base capacity and potentially pinpoint trends of high capacity usage on certain days or weeks within a month.
  4. To track your capacity usage and overages over a longer period, view the Monthly Usage chart. This chart helps you determine the percentage of usable capacity that you consume and how often you exceed your base capacity on a monthly basis.
  5. Start of changeAssess if you regularly exceed 75% (IBM Storage FlashSystem) or 85% (DS8000) of your usable capacity on a daily and monthly basis. If your monthly average usage exceeds 75% (IBM Storage FlashSystem) or 85% (DS8000) of your usable capacity, it might be time to add storage to your environment.End of change
