- The CO₂e tab displays a bar graph with bulleted line graph showing the
total power consumed (kWh) and carbon footprint (kgCO₂e) per day. The overall carbon footprint for
the storage systems over the last 7 days is also displayed. Note:
- Carbon footprint is the measurement of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) emissions for a specific entity.
- IBM Storage
Insights collects the power consumption
data from the storage systems and calculates the carbon footprint by using the following
formula:
Where,CO2e = Energy consumption * PUE * CEFEnergy consumption = Average power consumed * Number of hours- PUE is a ratio that describes how efficiently a computer data center uses energy. Specifically, how much energy is used by the computing equipment. PUE is the ratio of the total amount of energy used by a computer data center to the energy delivered to computing equipment. The closer PUE is to 1, the more efficient the computer data center.
- CO2e factor (kgCO₂e/kWh) that is Carbon Emission Factor (CEF), is a measurement of how clean the electricity is. It refers to how many kilograms of carbon dioxide are released to produce 1 kilo watt-hour (kWh) of electricity. Electricity generated by using fossil fuels is more carbon intensive as the process emits the carbon dioxide. Renewable energy sources, such as wind, hydro, or solar power, does not emit carbon dioxide. So, their CEF is lower and often zero. Country specific CEF value is taken from Carbon Database Initiative website.
- Example: If energy consumption of a storage system is 0.05 kWh, carbon footprint is
calculated as
follows:
Carbon footprint = 0.05 * 1.5 * 0.25 = 0.01875 kgCO₂e - By default, PUE is set to
1.5and CEF is set to0.25kgCO₂e/kWh. You can modify these values in the page. For more information, see Monitoring environmental metrics in IBM Storage Insights. - Editing the CEF and PUE constants is audited and the audit log is available for your reference. For more information, see Audit actions.
- The Power tab displays the total power consumed (KWatts) and power efficiency(KWatts or Raw TB) statistics for last 7 days in the bar graph.
- The Temperature displays the statistical data in a histogram graph with unit as Celsius or Fahrenheit.
- Click the zoom bar icon in the widget for expanded view of the environment metrics.
- In expanded view of the carbon emission (CO₂e) metric, you can view the details in table format, export the data to CSV, JPG, or PNG formats, and customize the duration for viewing carbon emission (kgCO₂e) trend.
- Click the vertical dotted menu in the widget to perform the following actions:

Performance Deviation
- I/O rate
- Data rate
- Response time
- Transfer size
A deviation refers to a sudden spike in a metrics value for a storage system. The widget detects and displays deviations at the storage system level. The deviations are displayed in the form of a graph along with timestamp and the metrics.
- Widget: The Performance Deviation widget provides a summary of
performance deviations for the block storage systems. The widget provides performance deviation
summary for I/O rate, data rate, response time, and transfer size metrics. For each metric, the last
14 days of deviation data is displayed on the widget where a rectangular box represents a single
day. It starts from 14 days ago to yesterday, moving from left to right. The days are counted by
using the UTC timezone.
You can click on a rectangular box to view the deviation data of a specific day for a specific metric. The color of the box indicates the number of deviations for that particular day. When you click a rectangular box, the widget displays a detailed view of the deviations for that particular day. When you hover the mouse on any rectangular box, a tooltip displays further details, such as the number of deviations that occurred for the respective metric on a particular day.
It takes 14 days for a new device to be added and for an excluded or removed system to be completely removed from the exempted systems list.
- Detailed view: When a user clicks a rectangular box for a metric, the widget opens the
side window that displays the list of storage systems that observed the performance deviations on a
particular day. Users can also apply searching and sorting operations to the deviation data similar
to other modernized UI pages. The download icon allows users to download the deviation report for
the selected day. An expandable icon is available for each storage system that is listed in the
tabular view to get the details of all deviations and get a more granular view.

The window provides a detailed breakdown in a tabular format with the following parameters:
- Observation: Displays the count of deviations with the storage system name. To view the details of all deviations along with the metrics value, click the expand (>) icon available at the start of the row. In the expanded mode, the column reads the increased or decreased observed deviation, such as Increased I/O rate or Decreased transfer rate.
- Deviation Value: Displays the observed deviated value of the metric.
- Deviation %: Displays the amount of deviation by comparing to the normal range value expressed as a percentage.
- Time: Displays the time at which the deviation occurred in the in browser's timezone. On hovering a time value, the column shows the browser timezone based date of the deviation.
- Preview: Displays the graphical view of the deviation. When you click a graph, a window appears with a graphical view of the performance deviation of the metric value for that day.
- Config changes: Provides insights by comparing the snapshots. If a storage system has multiple snapshots on the same day, the latest snapshot is used for comparison. The common configuration changes include firmware updates and component additions or deletions.
When a user expands a deviation entry for a specific storage system, a detailed view of performance deviations appears. The detailed view displays performance deviation metrics for that particular storage system along with the metrics, metrics value, deviation, the time of deviation, and the deviation view in the graphical format. The detailed view is only available to the IBM Storage Insights Pro users.

- Settings: The settings icon, available at the upper-right side on the
widget, opens the Settings dialog box. The dialog box allows users to
configure the deviation threshold and system exceptions.
