Migrating data collection method

In IBM Storage Insights, you can only use Call Home with cloud services or data collectors at a time as part of your overall monitoring strategy of the storage systems.

To migrate from existing data collection method to Call Home with cloud services, use IBM Storage Virtualize storage management GUIs to integrate storage systems with IBM Storage Insights.

You can use any one of the following three options to migrate system from data collection method to Call Home with cloud services:
  • Option 1:
    1. On the IBM Storage Insights, look for the Toast Notification at page refresh.
    2. On the Switch data collection to Call Home with cloud services notification, click More details.
    3. Select the device on the next pop-up window and click Switch to change the data collection method to Call Home with cloud services.
  • Option 2:
    1. On the IBM Storage Insights, navigate to Configuration > Call Home Storage Systems. A list of devices ready for migration appears and number of devices with Pending status.
    2. After you select the device that is in Pending, the option to Switch to Call Home with cloud services gets enabled.
    3. Click Switch to change to Call Home with cloud services.
  • Option 3:
    1. On the IBM Storage Insights, navigate to Insights > Advisor.
    2. Search for the device name in the Filter box.
    3. In the list of notifications that appears, double click the notification you are looking for.
    4. A window Switch data collection to Call Home with cloud services appears at the right side. Select the System ID and click Switch to change to Call Home with cloud services.

The notification is also displayed on the Insights > Advisor page.

Restriction: You can only migrate the storage systems that run IBM Storage Virtualize 8.5.3 and later and have 128 GB of memory per node.
Points to remember while migrating:
  • Once your storage system is migrated to Call Home with cloud services, it cannot be changed to a data collector or vice versa, unless you remove the storage system and add it again via other methods. But the historical data of the storage system is lost.
  • If migration of data collection method fails, the storage system is still managed by data collector and there are no changes in the operations. You can retry for migration immediately or after some time.

The data loss during migration is negligible and does not impact performance once the migration is successful. The new data starts coming through Call Home with cloud services within 10 minutes.
