Updating connection manager

With IBM® Storage Defender® 2.0.10 and later, you can set the preference to update the connection manager to the latest version either automatically or on demand by editing the update settings.

Before you begin

Before you proceed, make sure that you take a backup of your connection manager. In the event of a disaster where the connection manager is lost, the backup can be restored to a newly redeployed connection manager. For more information, see Backing up and restoring connection manager.
Note: Before you perform an update, ensure that the root partition of the connection manager host has at least 20 GB free space available.

Procedure

To set the update preference for the connection manager, complete the following steps:

  1. Log in to IBM Storage Defender.
  2. Navigate to Data Resiliency Service > Connections > Connection managers.
    Tips:
    • You can use the search option to reduce the list to a specific group.
      1. In the search field, enter the connection manager name or partial name of the connection manager.
      2. The list is adjusted and reduced automatically.
    • You can also use the filter option to reduce the list to a specific group.
      1. Click the filter icon and choose the options for State, Version, and Update status from the respective drop-down lists.
      2. Click Apply. The list is adjusted and reduced automatically.
  3. Select a connection manager or multiple connection managers and click Edit update settings from the displayed batch action bar. This action opens the Edit update settings wizard. For automatic or on-demand updates, complete one of the following actions:
    Setup automatic update
    1. On the Edit update settings wizard, select the Automatic tile.
    2. From the following options displayed, select the frequency that you want to update connection manager:
      • As soon as possible: The next time IBM Storage Defender detects a new available update, it automatically updates the associated connection manager to that version.

      • Daily: Set a duration within the day when IBM Storage Defender queues and initiates updates if available.

      • Weekly: Set the day of the week and the duration when IBM Storage Defender queues and initiates updates if available.

      • Monthly: Set the date of the month and the duration when IBM Storage Defender queues and initiates updates if available.

    Setup on-demand update
On the Edit update settings wizard, select the On demand tile from the displayed options. IBM Storage Defender notifies you whenever an update is available. You can update the connection manager with the Update now feature. For more information, see Updating connection manager by using Update now.
    Note:
    • The time zone defaults to the local time of the user.
    • Queued updates that do not start by the end time will automatically get rescheduled for the next update window.
    • For the monthly option, if you select any of the last three dates of the month, the update starts on the last date of the next month, if the selected recurring date does not occur in that month.
  4. Click Save. The success notification for modified update setting is displayed.

If connection manager fails to update, you can click the update status of the respective connection manager to view more information about the reason for the update failure in a pop-up window.

    Important:

For a batch action when multiple connection managers are set for automatic update, if one connection manager fails to update, the updates for the rest of the selected connection managers are paused. You will need to manually resume the connection manager update for any paused connection managers. For more information, see Pausing or resuming a connection manager update.
