Erasure code plugins

Ceph supports erasure coding with a plug-in architecture, which means you can create erasure-coded pools by using different erasure coding algorithms.

Starting with IBM Storage Ceph 9.9.0, the default erasure code plug-in for new clusters changes from Jerasure to ISA-L. ISA-L (Intel® Intelligent Storage Acceleration Library) provides optimized Reed-Solomon–based erasure coding with improved encoding and recovery performance on modern CPUs.Clusters that are upgraded to IBM Storage Ceph 9.9.0 continue to use the existing Jerasure-based default profile. You can still create custom profiles using either plug-in.

Ceph supports the following erasure code plug-ins:
  • ISA-L - Default for new clusters created in IBM Storage Ceph 9.9.0 and later.
  • Jerasure - Default for clusters created before IBM Storage Ceph 9.9.0 and still supported.
  • Intel Storage Acceleration (ISA) library (Default) Jerasure
