Recovering from a mechanical failure

How to recover from a mechanical failure when you use IBM Storage Archive.

About this task

When a library receives an error message from one of its mechanical parts, the operation to move a cartridge cannot be performed.
Note: However, a drive in the library normally performs well despite a failure so that ongoing access to an opened file on the loaded cartridge is not interrupted or damaged.

Complete the following steps to recover a library from a mechanical failure:

Procedure

  1. Issue one of the following IBM Storage Archive unmount commands, depending on your operating system, to initiate a cartridge unload operation for each cartridge in each drive. For Linux® systems, see Unmounting a library.
    Operating system Command
    Linux umount or fusermount -u
Attention: The unmount command might encounter an error when it tries to move a cartridge from a drive to a storage slot. However, if a cartridge is successfully unloaded from a drive the failure to move it should not be a problem in recovery. To confirm that this is the case, it is recommended that you access the library operator panel or the web user interface to view the status of the cartridge.
  2. Turn off the power to the library and remove the source of the error.
  3. Follow the procedure that is documented in Recovering from a power failure.
Note: One or more inconsistent cartridges might be found in the storage slots.
